Infinity Ward are likely to be the next COD developer to release a title, having launched Call of Duty: Ghosts in 2013 and now working to a three-year cycle.
They posted a message to their fans on Twitter, writing: "Happy new year!! 2016 is going to be incredible. Let's do this."
They followed up the tweet with a call-back to their Ghosts title, posting a picture of the in-game astronaut celebrating, with character Mosley taking centre-stage.

Call of Duty developers have spoken in the past about the game heading into space, with former Infinity Ward producer Mark Rubin commenting in 2013: ""yeah. It makes sense. I wouldn't count it out.
"Everything's on the table. When we start a new game every possibility's on the table. If we think that it'd be cool to have a battle over Jupiter, sure. Why not?
However he also went on to clarify that key COD core gameplay mechanics, such as grenades and killstreaks would only function well inside a space station.

Call of Duty: Ghosts opening sequence takes places in space but it remains to be seen if Infinity Ward will be focusing their attentions on Ghosts 2, Modern Warfare 4, or something new.
It should also be noted that even though the publisher trademarked Call of Duty: Space Warfare in 2010, this has since been abandoned, with titles such as Destiny branching out into the market.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 multiplayer director Dan Bunting also touched on the subject in 2015, commenting that he thought COD had to stay grounded in believeable technology to stay authentic to the series.
