Ludwig van Beethoven's Google Doodle on the search engine's home page today |
TODAY marks 240 years since the baptism of celebrated classical composer, Ludwig van Beethoven.
To commemorate the anniversary of one of the most influential composers of all time, Google have invited visitors to participate in their Doodle challenge.
The Doodle is a short interactive story in which a young, bungling Beethoven stumbles into trouble on his way to perform at a concert hall.
The challenge is to help Beethoven reconstruct some of his most famous symphonies by dragging and dropping sections of the music back into their original form.
Although Beethoven was baptised on December 17th, the exact date of his birth was in dispute for a short time.
Most scholars have now settled on December 16th, making the German 56 at the time of his passing.
Users must help Beethoven reconstruct his masterpieces as he suffers a series of mishaps |
Visitors are invited to drag and drop sections of the German composer's iconic pieces back into form |
Perhaps most famously however, Beethoven lost his hearing as he approached the peak of his career, suffering with what would now be diagnosed as a severe case of tinnitus.
Google Doodles began in 1998 after the company’s founders, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, placed a stick figure drawing behind the second ‘o’ in the word Google as a message to users that they were “out of the office” attending a music and art festival.
Beethoven's life was blighted by tragedy and bad luck, despite his successes |
Since then, the idea of celebrating historic and cultural moments on the search engine’s home page has grown considerably, with a dedicated team of ‘doodlers’ meeting weekly to discuss potential upcoming events.
More than 2000 doodles have been created on home pages around the world, marking both international and regional events.
Visit google.com/doodles to see every one of them.
