Who was Sophie Taeuber-Arp? And why is there a Google Doodle celebrating her life?

<section class="text-description"><section class="text-description"><strong>Who was Sophie Taeuber-Arp? </strong><br />
Born on January 19, 1889, in Davos, Switzerland as Sophie Henriette Gertrude Taeuber, Taeuber-Arp left home at 18 to study textile design in Germany before returning to Zurich in 1915.<br />
Upon returning, Taeuber-Arp began to produce non-representational paintings – these were heavily influenced by her training in textile design.<br />
Around the same time, Taeuber-Arp met French sculptor, painter and collagist Jean (Hans) Arp – the man with whom she would later collaborate with before marrying in 1922.</section><section class="pull-quote on-right"><blockquote class="nointellitxt ctx_blocked" id="nointellitxt">

<strong>What is the Dada movement?</strong><br />
The Dada movement celebrated the avant-garde – a conceptual approach to creating art - this often resulted in what would be widely considered as unorthodox materials appearing in abstract, unfamiliar compositions.<br />

While teaching textile deign at the Zurich School of Arts and Crafts, Taeuber-Arp was actively involved in Zurich's Dada group, in fact, she regularly performed at the Cabaret Voltaire nightclub – a firm favourite with the Dada crowd.<br />
When the Nazis invaded Paris, Taeuber-Arp and her husband fled to southern France, they returned to Zurich in late 1942, where she died the following year.<br />

Creator of Iyengar Yoga, BKS was born in 1918 in southern India - one of 13 children, with only 10 surviving.</div>

BKS suffered from a series of illnesses as a child, including malaria and typhoid - in an attempt to restore his poor health, he was introduced to yoga by his brother-in-law, Tirumalai Krishnamacharya – who ran a yoga school.</div>

In his later teenage years Iyengar was sent to Pune in Maharashtra to teach yoga – and by 1952 he became an international guru – introducing renowned violinist Yehudi Menuhin to the art.</div>

Having impressed Menuhin, Iyengar was invited to Switzerland in 1954. Soon after, he continued to visit the West and schools teaching his brand of yoga began opening across the globe.</div>

Iyengar died on 20 August 2014 from kidney failure at 95-years-old, his teachings however, remain an intrinsic part of the backbone that form the fundamentals of yoga.</div>
