A NEW adult entertainment firm is hoping to transform the way the world watching online xxx-rated content – but could this be a step too far?
Porn companies seem to think the future of their industry lies in interactive, virtual entertainment.
A number of US firms have already started regularly producing content for Virtual Reality headsets, which allows viewers to see the films from the performers' perspective and independently look around 360-degrees.
But now a new service has unveiled a new – slightly creepy – take on VR pornography.
Porn firm CamSoda has debuted its first live virtual experience, which hopes to transport porn fans into a room full of adult actresses in real-time.
Viewers are able to look around the room freely and can even communicate with the actresses using instant messaging.
The adult firm wants its customers to feel as though they are in the room and part of a real experience.
CamSoda says they will host the live virtual reality sessions once a week, with the company even constructing its own 360-degree rig built from six GoPro cameras.
Footage from the six high definition cameras is stitched together with a powerful computer and beamed to VR headsets over the web.
Daron Lundeen, President of CamSoda says the adult entertainment industry has long been an early adopter of cutting edge technology, and virtual reality is no different.
"The adult entertainment industry has long been an early adopter of cutting edge technology and virtual reality is no different." he said.
"It is quickly becoming one of the most talked about subjects within the industry for its potential to provide users with a truly immersive and transformational experience,
"We want our users to reap the benefits of technological innovation, utilising our unique capabilities for their pleasure.
"With that, we give to you the first-ever live interactive virtual reality experience."
After the rise in piracy and free clip websites, porn companies are hoping to bring in some revenue with this new VR offering.
Alongside the cost of a virtual reality headset, such as Google Cardboard or Samsung's Galaxy VR, customers will have to subscribe to premium services to access the immersive content.
But it remains to be seen how consumers will react to wearing a pair of gadget goggles whilst watching pornography and if whether they are prepared to pay for the privilege.
One US analyst has reported that VR porn is set to become big business with $1 billion spent on this new form of adult content by 2020.
Next year already looks like a big one for virtual reality with PlayStation, HTC and Oculus Rift all expected to launch their headsets in the next few months.
Google and Samsung are also joining the VR party with their cheaper versions which use smartphones as the screen.
