Tesla Model S owners have shown what can happen when the Autopilot veers off-course |
EARLY ADOPTERS reveal what happens when Tesla's experimental new autopilot feature goes WRONG.
Tesla Model S electric cars now have the ability to drive themselves, thanks to a clever new software update.
But a handful of owners have already discovered that drivers still need to keep an eye on the road – and two hands hovering above the steering wheel.
The new feature is still in beta, so bugs and glitches are to be expected.
However Tesla owners have uploaded a number of hair-raising videos which show what happens when the software misjudges the road ahead.
One owner is forced to grasp the wheel after the Tesla Model S swerves into the oncoming lane – and traffic – while emitting the warning noise which signals an imminent side impact.
Another hugely popular YouTube video shows the car falter when the painted white lanes on a US highway disappear on one side of the vehicle.
Confused by the sudden lack of road markings – the car veers towards the lay-by.

The Tesla AutoPilot system has also been pulled over by police for speeding.
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has previously cautioned early adopters: "We’re being especially cautious at this early stage, so we’re advising drivers to keep their hands on the wheel just in case.
"The software is very new."
Tesla has also reminded customers that it is the driver who is responsible for the car at all times – even when the vehicle is driving itself.
The Autopilot software update will be rolled out across Europe and Asia as soon as it has been given regulatory approval, Elon Musk has confirmed.
Whether or not you'll be happy test out it after seeing these viral vidoe clips remains entirely up to you.
