There has been a surge in the number of women requesting 'designer vagina' surgery

Girls as young as 16 are undergoing cosmetic surgery to alter the appearance of their nether regions.

 

This might the craziest side-effect of the yoga craze. 

An obsession with looking good in downward-dog friendly attire is driving a sharp rise in the number of women opting to have 'designer vagina' surgery, a leading plastic surgeon has revealed. 

 

The number of restructuring operations increased by a staggering 49 per cent in just one year, according to the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS). 

Even more shocking is the age range of women going under the knife.

Girls from as young as 16 to women in their 70s are opting for the cosmetic surgery to transform the appearance of their genitals. 

Labiaplasty, as it is medically known, is a procedure performed on the labia or 'lips' on the outside of the vagina. 

The surgery can be carried out on the outer, larger vaginal lips (labia major) or the smaller, internal vagina lips (labia minora). 

The procedure, which is typically performed to correct asymmetry, can change the size and shape of a woman's labia.

 



Dr Walden said wearing tight yoga pants makes women more self-conscious



Another operation popular for ladies' private parts is vaginoplasty, which aims to tighten a vagina that has become loose due to ageing or childbirth.

Aesthetic plastic surgeon and spokesperson for the ASAPS, Dr Jennifer Walden, said labiaplasty is one of the most sought-after surgeries amongst women. 

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: "It is one of the fastest rising procedures, in terms of popularity. 

"It can prove life-changing for so many patients"

As for what's driving the surge, Dr Walden said wearing tight yoga pants, jeans and swimwear make women more self-conscious of their genital area. 

"It has become fashionable and as a result women have, all of a sudden, started to see things they may not have taken notice of before."

Labiaplasty operations can cost between approximately £2500 - £5200.
