Sexy underwear through the ages: From hold-ups to CORSETS, high-cut pants to silk gowns

WHAT'S considered stylish now wouldn't have been appropriate back in 1915 - which is what makes lingerie through the ages so interesting.

What a difference a hundred years makes to fashion. Back in 1915 if you were a woman you'd be slipping into a less-than-sexy white cotton jumpsuit at night.
The above-the-knee garment was made for warmth and comfort rather than sex appeal, clearly. (Maybe that's something today's designers could take on board?)
Website Mode has taken a look back through the years at how lingerie fashion has changed, using model Arianny Celeste.
Ten years after baggy white shorts were all the rage, it was the fabulous 1920s with flapper girls out in force.

The fashions were reflected in the bedroom too with ribbons and sheer materials making an appearance.
A decade later and we're seeing a sexy two-piece for the first time. The silk bra and high-waisted shorts set flattered the impressive curves of a 1930s woman.
In the 1940s suspenders were in, stockings were in and sex appeal was on the cards. Finally women were being seen as equal individuals and growing in confidence.
Fluffy-toed heels, hair in rollers and a long silk dressing gown was all a woman needed in the bedroom.

Women's underwear took a turn toward being sexy in 1925, with see-through material and ribbons

Just ten years later, the fashion changed again and the two-piece was born
With another 10 years, we hit 1955. It's dubbed the 'frilly and flirty' decade where baby dolls were invented.
There was nothing sexier than a baby pink slip with a slick of red lipstick, back in those days.
When women weren't burning their bras back in 1965, they were embracing underwire and push-up brassieres.
High-cut bottoms were in the in-things and bras holding down the breasts helped form the Twiggy-like shape everyone was after.

This babydoll was the first of its type and really changed fashion
From 1975 to 1985, things couldn't be more different. In the 70s everything long, lean and silk was on trend.
In comparison, ten years later, it was all about Lycra, thighs and positively huge hair.
With the introduction Girl Power and the Spice Girls also came the corset being introduced to the bedroom.
Silky and often red, the garments were the height of sophistication in the 1990s.
Possibly most bizarre is what Mode believes is today's on-trend underwear: satin rompers paired with chunky necklaces.
Each to their own, Mode.
