JUST when you thought you’d seen it all, end-of-life treatment is now online.
A charity organisation has set a high standard for the role of technology in 2016.
In case the power of the World Wide Web wasn’t far-reaching enough, there will soon be an online portal that gives people more control over their own death.
MyDecisions.org.uk will allow people to complete an online declaration for how they wish to be treated in the final stages of their life.
The document, dubbed an ‘advance statement’, enables a person to refuse a specific type of medicine or drug at some time in the future, should they ever unable to state it in future.
Compassion in Dying, the organisation who created the website, said people who use it will have greater control over their death.
The charity said MyDecisions.org.uk was created in response to growing concerns for how people were to manage their own end-of-life treatment if they didn’t have the ability to do so.
Launching this week, the website takes people through various scenarios should their health fail.
Reportedly, the ‘advance statement’ which is also referred to as a ‘living will’ is to be legally binding.
In other words, if a health professional ignores the statement they can be taken to court.
The development follows research by Compassion in Dying, which found that only four per cent of Brits had recorded their end-of-life preferences.
Patient care in the final weeks of their life is a highly controversial topic.
The website is due to launch on Thursday.
