THE autumnal equinox is the astronomical term for the first day of autumn and has been marked today by a Google Doodle.
It's time to get those jumpers out and prepare to carve those pumpkins because autumn is finally here.
As the leaves on the tress begin to turn golden, Google has marked the first day of autumn in the Earth's Northern hemisphere with their own Google Doodle.
The Doodle is made up of autumnal vegetables and an adorable squirrel.
What is the autumnal equinox? According to experts, the autumnal equinox occurs when the sun lines up directly with the Earth's equator, resulting in almost every place on Earth experiencing approximately 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness.
Today's Google Doodle was created by California-based animator Kirsten Lepore.
Weather-beaten Britons can even look forward to some cheery sunshine to brighten up the start of the astronomical autumn.
However it will be a stormy ride in the meantime with chilly winds pushing temperatures into the low single figures over the next couple of days.
Thermometers in Scotland and the north will hover around 2C (36F) or lower overnight with highs of around 18C (64F) in the south.
The Met Office said the rest of this week will remain largely unsettled with high pressure perking things up by the weekend.
Forecaster Emma Sharples said: “The next few days will be fairly unsettled before high pressure builds into the weekend.
“Temperatures will start to recover and could nudge a little bit above average with much better weather likely in parts of the country next week.
“On Wednesday another band of rain moves into the northwest although it is looking better elsewhere.”
