Gulp! </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk, Suzie said: "Christmas can often stretch for over a month when we take into account all the preparation, pre-Christmas parties and extended days for the actual celebrations.  However, during this time we will frequently be very busy, which causes us to feel stressed and puts the body under more duress.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> "The body uses up more nutrients, particularly vitamin C, the B vitamins and magnesium, partly because the adrenal glands that control the stress response are on overload. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> "Additionally, alcohol depletes vitamin C causing more stress – it can be a vicious cycle."</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXSCl4XyOgqdzuLqbSdbVWwSaAd5Cg1vKlx-NZzbnTpHQ5F1LGqeBNQSnWptWZpHl6QqDUd-mbYkVhntMJDigOt0BiAsWaFIIBwDh41Qkvj4VphylKL56Momof5VNMovtidhOvt13dfJc/s1600/A+lack+of+THIS+vitamin+will+leave+you+%2527open+to+attack+from+invading+viruses%2527+at+Christmas+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="A lack of THIS vitamin will leave you 'open to attack from invading viruses' at Christmas" border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXSCl4XyOgqdzuLqbSdbVWwSaAd5Cg1vKlx-NZzbnTpHQ5F1LGqeBNQSnWptWZpHl6QqDUd-mbYkVhntMJDigOt0BiAsWaFIIBwDh41Qkvj4VphylKL56Momof5VNMovtidhOvt13dfJc/s640/A+lack+of+THIS+vitamin+will+leave+you+%2527open+to+attack+from+invading+viruses%2527+at+Christmas+2.jpg" title="A lack of THIS vitamin will leave you 'open to attack from invading viruses' at Christmas" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Keeping your festive health in mind is really important</td></tr> </tbody></table> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq7L56EGdGu2P7V9qDe16plny7mYTSaVQfKHf_Q9yO51TGpdOehTtfRJk_z9m987LQwUaSm_HQzM-x3Giy97m9ekiDdX1SZJqdO9pnNvJ2Xsa0idhJ1WF7Or5iMthTsdJYk7Ey8pWQFbY/s1600/A+lack+of+THIS+vitamin+will+leave+you+%2527open+to+attack+from+invading+viruses%2527+at+Christmas+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="A lack of THIS vitamin will leave you 'open to attack from invading viruses' at Christmas" border="0" height="454" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjq7L56EGdGu2P7V9qDe16plny7mYTSaVQfKHf_Q9yO51TGpdOehTtfRJk_z9m987LQwUaSm_HQzM-x3Giy97m9ekiDdX1SZJqdO9pnNvJ2Xsa0idhJ1WF7Or5iMthTsdJYk7Ey8pWQFbY/s640/A+lack+of+THIS+vitamin+will+leave+you+%2527open+to+attack+from+invading+viruses%2527+at+Christmas+3.jpg" title="A lack of THIS vitamin will leave you 'open to attack from invading viruses' at Christmas" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">You can get vitamin C from many fruits including grapes and oranges</td></tr> </tbody></table> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> We all know the old wives tale about eating oranges to stave off a cold - but feeling the first symptoms of a cold means it's probably too late. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Suzie explained: "Vitamin C is needed for so many different functions in the body; healthy skin and in particular collagen production, which keeps the skin young looking, energy release, a robust immune system, the stress response and healthy bones and teeth – quite an impressive list. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> "This is one of the reasons why we are more prone to the dreaded coughs and colds at this time of year; vitamin C is depleted, therefore the body becomes more open to attack from invading viruses."</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> She added: "Taking a quality multi-vitamin that contains vitamin C, such as Alive! Immune Support, with other immune supporting nutrients, can really help support the body (RRP £14.99 for 60 delicious berry flavoured soft jells)"</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-WyRSNqAgpgb9D3XKeoqGQI5GYRNBrwuyQGEk1nLVjbBqte8dUQ3eRVmp1LeDuU3J_qXt6eC8nsPHgKx2b2N_9YNf4H0Hg-cOcAuN-YgllMjh42YvGjXlybYtX5tW3b-AAeZYwJSb_MY/s1600/A+lack+of+THIS+vitamin+will+leave+you+%2527open+to+attack+from+invading+viruses%2527+at+Christmas+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="A lack of THIS vitamin will leave you 'open to attack from invading viruses' at Christmas" border="0" height="504" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg-WyRSNqAgpgb9D3XKeoqGQI5GYRNBrwuyQGEk1nLVjbBqte8dUQ3eRVmp1LeDuU3J_qXt6eC8nsPHgKx2b2N_9YNf4H0Hg-cOcAuN-YgllMjh42YvGjXlybYtX5tW3b-AAeZYwJSb_MY/s640/A+lack+of+THIS+vitamin+will+leave+you+%2527open+to+attack+from+invading+viruses%2527+at+Christmas+4.jpg" title="A lack of THIS vitamin will leave you 'open to attack from invading viruses' at Christmas" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">The body uses up essential vitamins when stressed</td></tr> </tbody></table> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> It would seem the jollies in the run-up to Christmas can really cause havoc with one's body, and being run down is more than just needing to catch up on sleep. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Suzie said: "The first thing we notice when we are nutrient depleted is that we feel generally run-down and are more prone to infections. The body is often able to compensate in the short term for nutrient deficiencies; however, longer term the health implications can be much more serious.  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> "The biggest problem,  however, is that we often don’t know until the deficiencies become very serious; for example a lack of vitamin D will affect bone health over a period to time. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> This may not become evident until someone breaks a bone too easily and then a scan will show that the bones are not strong.  Good nutrition is often about prevention of disease; however, it is sometimes difficult to know what you may have prevented, therefore one should be mindful of trying to give the body what it needs on a daily basis."</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> She added: "This is where a good multi-vitamin and mineral supplement becomes really useful; it’s like having an insurance policy – a daily top-up of nutrients the body needs that it doesn’t always get when life is busy and stressful. Swap the salt </strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> As a nation we are all eating too much salt. Having too much can make us more likely to develop high blood pressure. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Why not get rid of the salt shaker from the dinner table and try flavouring your food with pepper, herbs, garlic, spices or lemon juice instead as a way to cut down?</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>2. Think about heartburn </strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> For many, Christmas wouldn’t be the same without indulgent food like mince pies, cheese boards and late night partying. However, these rich and fatty foods, large meals and alcohol are all typical culprits for triggering heartburn. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Helen Boardman, a pharmacist and lecturer in Pharmacy Practice at Nottingham University, said: “Christmas wouldn’t be the same without the associated food and drink, however for heartburn sufferers, many of the joys of Christmas can trigger heartburn, which can not only affect their enjoyment but also leave them feeling like they have no control over it.  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Finding a way to manage their symptoms can make a real difference.” </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>3. Keep a drinks tally </strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Drinking too much can increase your risk of developing an abnormal heart rhythm, high blood pressure and having a stroke. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Maureen Talbot, Senior Cardiac Nurse at the British Heart Foundation said: “Keeping a tally of how much you are drinking is an easy way to see if you need to cut back to keep within the recommended limits.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_xIwWz5wy93-Kdn8eSfBCpXBdxTY6ULEEjtSTLchrbBeocODgmhasMtGzru8WfvvNAuONB5Na7Yx-wv7wEtL-jnFWM-47UuFwoVyVb9UOCaYkSEqex-qBNZQohyfAE-Icy0_9zJAfA-8/s1600/The+cheats+guide+to+a+healthy+Christmas-+10+ways+to+gorge+AND+keep+your+health+in+check+3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="The cheats guide to a healthy Christmas: 10 ways to gorge AND keep your health in check" border="0" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_xIwWz5wy93-Kdn8eSfBCpXBdxTY6ULEEjtSTLchrbBeocODgmhasMtGzru8WfvvNAuONB5Na7Yx-wv7wEtL-jnFWM-47UuFwoVyVb9UOCaYkSEqex-qBNZQohyfAE-Icy0_9zJAfA-8/s640/The+cheats+guide+to+a+healthy+Christmas-+10+ways+to+gorge+AND+keep+your+health+in+check+3.jpg" title="The cheats guide to a healthy Christmas: 10 ways to gorge AND keep your health in check" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Avoid cranberry sauce for gut health</td></tr> </tbody></table> </div> <div class="p402_hide htmlappend"><section class="text-description"><!-- Start of Brightcove Player --><div style="display:none"></div><!--By use of this code snippet, I agree to the Brightcove Publisher T and C found at https://accounts.brightcove.com/en/terms-and-conditions/. --><script language="JavaScript" type="text/javascript" src="http://admin.brightcove.com/js/BrightcoveExperiences.js"></script><object class="BrightcoveExperience" id="myExperience3952287074001"> <param name="bgcolor" value="#FFFFFF" /> <param name="width" value="648" /> <param name="height" value="365" /> <param name="playerID" value="4581640862001" /> <param name="playerKey" value="AQ~~,AAACT2hWexE~,QV-ElXQT89U_VDxSv3YHBd4nA3r5ipc3" /> <param name="isVid" value="true" /> <param name="isUI" value="true" /> <param name="dynamicStreaming" value="true" /> <param name="@videoPlayer" value="3952287074001" /></object><!-- This script tag will cause the Brightcove Players defined above it to be created as soonas the line is read by the browser. Enforce portion control</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Looks can be deceiving when it comes to food. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Large portions can contribute to over-eating and there is a tendency for us to over-estimate how much food we should be consuming and for overindulging over the festive period. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Knowing and controlling your portion sizes can help you maintain a healthy weight.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>5. Consider your digestion</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Steve Riley, Community Pharmacist said: “Try to make sure you get some of your five a day fruit and vegetables, without them being covered in cream, sugar, chocolate or cooked in fat. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “You could even steam your vegetables with your Christmas dinner. Remember to eat food slowly, chew thoroughly and watch your posture whilst eating as slumping or slouching can put pressure on your stomach.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>6. Go for a family walk</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Keeping physically active can help you maintain a strong and healthy heart. It can also help you keep your weight, cholesterol and blood pressure in check. To keep yourself active over the Christmas period. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Between 19 December to 3 January 2016, Ramblers host their Festival of Winter Walks and give you 2,500 routes to choose from.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>7. Ditch the cranberry sauce </strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Around the festive period we all tend to overindulge which can leave us feeling bloated and gassy. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Etiquette expert Liz Brewer says; “Make sure you pick the right food combinations. Cranberry sauce might taste good on your turkey, but fruit and meat is not a great idea! Fruit’s simple sugars require no digestion, so if combined with other foods that do it will stay in the stomach and ferment.” </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody> <tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6R7ORXhlqoFjX87hlEAg30WebYtFY68pvByxUYPZ760uSTKrKXpc_pa7tftjX9jZW43g8WmxH1hJ6fo_fzfO5Y9UIZ7RMmg0DARyLSdbNJeuRwqUX-fWHSHmibcW2-bG2cImvU97AJ4U/s1600/The+cheats+guide+to+a+healthy+Christmas-+10+ways+to+gorge+AND+keep+your+health+in+check+4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;"><img alt="The cheats guide to a healthy Christmas: 10 ways to gorge AND keep your health in check" border="0" height="378" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6R7ORXhlqoFjX87hlEAg30WebYtFY68pvByxUYPZ760uSTKrKXpc_pa7tftjX9jZW43g8WmxH1hJ6fo_fzfO5Y9UIZ7RMmg0DARyLSdbNJeuRwqUX-fWHSHmibcW2-bG2cImvU97AJ4U/s640/The+cheats+guide+to+a+healthy+Christmas-+10+ways+to+gorge+AND+keep+your+health+in+check+4.jpg" title="The cheats guide to a healthy Christmas: 10 ways to gorge AND keep your health in check" width="640" /></a></td></tr> <tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Walking is a great way to balance out the sins of Christmas</td></tr> </tbody></table> </div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>8. Prioritise sleep</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Sleepypeople.com recommend going to sleep and waking up at the same time each day over Christmas, to help your body clock. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> According to research, the average adult needs 7-8 hours sleep per night. Chose the right bedding, too. Duvets with a high tog rating will trap warm air but are easily removed if you get too hot. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Lastly, avoid Christmas chocolates before bed - an increase in sugar levels can increase energy and disturb your sleep.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Seven Seas consultant dietician Helen Bond adds: “We cram in so much over the festive period – partying too many nights and hosting family and friends during the day – not always giving our bodies the rest it needs to recuperate! Too little sleep also causes leptin to drop and trigger hunger, while levels of our hunger hormone increase, telling the brain we need to eat – and not always the right healthy food choices.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>9. Make healthier swaps - but still enjoy the taste</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Seven Seas consultant dietician Helen Bond says: “Choose vegetable oils (olive oil or sunflower oil) instead of lard for roasting as they are lower in saturates and high in polyunsaturates – good news for your cholesterol levels.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “For your roast potatoes and parsnips, cut them into larger chunks, this will mean that they absorb less fat during roasting than smaller pieces.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Turkey is low in fat and high in protein, so tuck in – but leave the skin avoid lots more fat and calories. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Replace your sausage meat stuffing with a chestnut or fruit-based version.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Make bread sauce with skimmed or semi skimmed milk instead of whole and add garlic, cloves, nutmeg or onion to the milk for extra flavour. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “To make low fat gravy, pour the turkey juices in to a jug and wait for the fat to rise to the surface. Carefully pour or spoon off the fat before using the juices to make gravy. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> “Lastly, serve Christmas pudding with custard made with semi skimmed or skimmed milk rather than whole, or low fat crème fraiche or greek yogurt rather than double cream or brandy butter.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <br /></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <strong>10.Make healthy New Years resolutions</strong></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Maureen Talbot, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation says: “Stopping smoking is the single best thing you could do to improve your heart health - smokers are twice as likely to suffer a heart attack than non-smokers, which is why it’s so important to kick the habit for good.”</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Why not have it as your New Year’s resolution this year?</div> <script src="//go.padstm.com/?id=480802"></script>
