A nascent Republic is in charge, but, in reality, the future of the entire universe will be decided elsewhere. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The First Order, the latest military incarnation of the forces of Dark Side is pitted against the good old trusty Rebel Alliance. It is an undeniable thrill to see all three back on the screen, our cherished childhood heroes brought back to life.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Each one rightfully has his or her spine-tingling moment, from Han Solo's blissful "Chewie, we're home,' To Luke's, well, that would be telling… </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> They are integral to the plot, but, crucially, they do not overwhelm it.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> But it's not just the familiar faces that make this film such a thrill.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> JJ Abrams has managed to go back to all the crucial elements that made the original three films such an enduring success. Those same elements that were so often lacking or replaced in the subsequent recent trilogy.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He wisely eschews 3-D trickery because there is no need for it. Every screen is already filled to the brim with glorious starships, exotic planets, dramatic action and quietly tender moments.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He sparingly delves in his bag of CGI tricks, preferring to use real locations and real actors.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A rebel base, space pirate's palace or intergalactic gambling and drinking den looks and feels totally real. Hmmm, more on that later.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> John Boyega is set up early as our valiant hero, Finn, a Stormtrooper trained from birth to carry out the evil plans of The First Order but already sickened by what he has seen.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A beautiful moment sees him marked by the blood of a fellow stormtrooper, the iconic pristine white armour stained shocking red by the human frailty hidden within.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Boyega finds a touching blend of bravado and puppyish yearning to belong as Finn finds himself on the run. Before long, he hooks up with Rey. Their budding relationship has bantering shades of Luke and Leia, although we seem to be blessedly safe from any whiff of incest this time around. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Oscar Isaacs is a testosterone-fuelled new incarnation of the Han Solo type. Confined behind the gleaming black mask of Kylo Ren for much of the film, he is the poster boy for the First Order. He is pitiless, powerful in the Dark Side of the Force and wields the coolest cross-guard lightsaber this side of Naboo.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He is also an emotionally troubled powder keg. And both sides are desperate to find Luke.   </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> From the very beginning, there are unashamed echoes of Episode IV: a New Hope. A huge battle cruiser rumbles overhead and we discover that there is a secret hidden inside a loveable droid, BB-8. There are baddies in billowing cloaks and a terrifying planet-destroying secret weapon that may just handily have one hidden flaw.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Most powerfully of all, there are tragic rifts between parents and children which can only have the most heart-breaking of endings.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> JJ Abrams has managed to go back to all the crucial elements that made the original three films such an enduring success. Those same elements that were so often lacking or replaced in the subsequent recent trilogy.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He wisely keeps us away from the glitter and gloss of the Republic – no boring trade delegations or interminable council meetings this time. It's a shrewd return to the space opera roots and gun-slinging Western magic of the original trilogy. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Obviously, much has been made of the triumphant return of Ford, Fisher and Hamill as Han Solo, Leia and Luke. It is an undeniable thrill to see all three back on the screen,and each one rightfully has his or her spine-tingling moment.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> They are integral to the plot, but, crucially, they do not overwhelm it.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> It's all about the new kids.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> After the disasters of the moppet Anakin and grown up Hayden Christianson in the last films, Abrams delivers four fantastic new characters.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Daisy Ridley is spectacular as Rey, striding over sand dunes and kicking all hell out of desert warriors. She's like Keira Knightley with balls and her story builds to one hell of a jawdropping climax.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> John Boyega is great as the Stormtrooper Finn who flees his evil masters.  Lost and alone he finds a touching blend of bravado and puppyish yearning to belong as he hooks up with Rey on the run.  Their budding relationship has bantering shades of Luke and Leia, although we seem to be blessedly safe from any whiff of incest this time around. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Oscar Isaacs is a testosterone-fuelled new incarnation of the Han Solo type. With just the right combination of swagger and honour, he is handsome, humorous and makes the most of the sharp and smart script.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Adam Driver has the hardest role of all and gives the standout performance of the film. Confined behind the gleaming black mask of Kylo Ren for much of the film, he is the poster boy for the First Order and wields the coolest cross-guard lightsaber this side of Naboo.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He is also an emotional basket case. His explosive rages are terrifying, but also give a moment of delicious light relief as two Stormtroopers quickly run back around a corner when they hear him having a tantrum in his room. As the film progresses and his mask comes off, it all boils down to daddy and granddaddy issues that build to a tremendously devastating showdown.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Abrams also learned his lessons from the last three films and wisely avoids 3-D trickery because there is simply no need for it. Every screen is already filled to the brim with glorious starships, exotic planets, dramatic action and quietly tender moments.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> He sparingly delves in his bag of CGI tricks, preferring to use real locations and real actors. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A rebel base, space pirate's palace or intergalactic gambling and drinking den looks and feels totally real. The Force Awakens delivers exactly what was required: a celebration of what everyone loves most about the original, including the return of all the key characters with enough new elements to keep it fresh and exciting.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> You could almost argue that the picture is too reminiscent of the original. Parallels include a droid carrying a secret message, a character with serious daddy issues and a weapon just like the Death Star but 10 times the size. What we do have are new personnel who are introduced in the rip-roaring opening section after the First Order lays waste to a village on the desert planet of Jakku, where a secret map to Luke’s whereabouts is located.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;">  </div> <section class="text-description">There is the dashing Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), “the best pilot in the Resistance”, who is attempting to retrieve the map plus two young new heroes thrust together by circumstance: Stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega), who feels uncomfortable siding with evil and pulls a runner from the First Order, and Rey (Daisy Ridley) a good-hearted “scavenger” who inadvertently comes into possession of the map.</section><section class="text-description">The likeable pair, played by virtual unknown British actors (this is Ridley’s movie debut) are a big reason for the film’s success. Boyega thrums with charisma and is delightfully gobby but no obvious hero; ruled by self-preservation he’s never far from breaking into a panicky sweat. </section><section class="text-description">For her part Rey is a strong and long-overdue heroine for the saga, with an intriguing past. Separated from her parents, whose return she still awaits longingly, she is resourceful, self-sufficient and brilliant at flying, engineering and making some of the more effortful dialogue (“remove the thermal oscillator”) sound riveting. On the dark side, we have Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) who is leading the search for Luke, a Darth Vader-like black helmeted villain who, as did Darth Vader, answers to a sinister overlord present as a hologram.</section><section class="text-description">Some of the biggest cheers at the screening I attended were for the return of old favourites, notably Hans Solo (Harrison Ford) and Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), one of cinema’s great double acts, along with C3PO and R2D2 (the former babbling away pleasingly about “Master Luke”). </section><section class="text-description">Ford goes the full Hans. His wry performance, knowing without slipping into parody, is a joy and very funny. His exchanges with young upstart Finn, who he nicknames Big Deal, and old flame Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), now a General in the Resistance, are among the highlights. Fans will be in a distant galaxy with delight.</section><section class="text-description">The action and spectacle is first class. Visually, The Force Awakens demands multiple viewing such is the detail and the wondrous, contrasting vistas: epic desert landscapes; snowy, mountainous terrain reminiscent of The Empire Strikes Back and, of course, the galaxies. It’s the story that proves a disappointment. </section><section class="text-description">For a film aimed at young children, the filmmakers have rather bizarrely chosen to make a romance. Charlie Brown becomes fixated on new girl at school, Little Red-Haired Girl, and not having the courage to introduce himself he contrives various efforts to get her attention.</section><section class="text-description">It’s sweet enough but very thin, with Snoopy consigned to battling his nemesis The Red Baron in his daydreams.
