While both sexes experience chest pain before or during a heart attack, women may be more likely to have unusual symptoms instead such as shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and back, jaw or neck pain.</div>

The telltale signs of heart attacks in women often go unnoticed or mistaken for other health problems, meaning women are often treated less quickly and could suffer more damage as a result.</div>

Many people are not aware that the telltale signs for heart attacks differ between genders. according to a report by the American Heart Association.</div>

Dr Laxmi Mehta, the lead author of the study, said: “Women seem to do worse for several reasons.” </div>

At hospital, women may be less likely to receive medications to help prevent blood clots, lower blood pressure and cholesterol.</div>

Both men and women get heart attacks caused by blockages in the main arteries leading to the heart, the clots differ between the genders.</div>

Men have more of a “classic” type of blockage, where plaque ruptures off the artery wall, forms a blood clot and causes a complete halt of blood flow through the artery to the heart.</div>

Dr Mehta, the director of women’s cardiovascular health at Ohio State University in Columbus, added: “There is a lot at stake for women when there is a delay in treatment or lack of adherence to recommended therapies.”</div>

On the other hand, Dr. Sheila Sahni, chief fellow in cardiovascular disease at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California Los Angeles, said: “Women more often, tend to have a plaque erosion where smaller pieces of plaque break off, become exposed and cause the formation of smaller blood clots which may or may not cause total occlusions all at once, leading to a more subtle presentation.”</div>

Women also tend to be older - by about a decade - than men when they suffer heart attacks. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The report suggests this might mean women are frailer and more likely to suffer from other health problems such as diabetes that can make treatment more complicated.</div>

Risk factors also differ between men and women. High blood pressure is more strongly associated with women and heart attacks, and young women with type-2 diabetes face a heart disease risk that’s up to five times greater than men’s.</div>

More evidence is also mounting indicating psychological stresses can increase the risk of heart disease - and it’s affecting more women than men.</div>

As well as different risk factors, women are often underrepresented at clinical trials and there are huge disparities between race. Black women have a higher incidence of heart attacks in all age categories. </div>

The report reiterates the importance in getting help once a heart attack begins. </div>

Dr Leslie Cho, director of the women’s cardiovascular centre at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio added: “Time is muscle.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
“If women are diagnosed and treated later in the course of the heart attack, they can suffer from irreversible heart damage.”</div>

The statement issued by the American Heart Association was published in the journal of Circulation.</div>

Perfluoroalkyl ethyl is also known as perfluorochemicals (PFCs) - and perfluorochemicals (PFCs) are defined by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services as: "…a group of chemicals used to make fluoropolymer coatings and products that resist heat, oil, stains, grease, and water."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Authorities in the US have now banned the chemical - amongst others - because it may be harmful to health.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A statement from the US Food and Drug Administration said they were “proposing that we amend our food additive regulation to no longer provide for the use of three specific perfluoroalkyl ethyl containing food-contact substances (FCSs) as oil and water repellants for paper and paperboard for use in contact with aqueous and fatty foods.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In a nutshell, this means food can't be sold in the US if it's been in direct contact with boxes treated with the substances. </div>

It's unknown what the banned substance can do to you - but it's a strong move for the US government to ban it. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What about the UK? Well, it's would seem the same rule doesn't apply but there's a debate as to whether or not the chemicals are used over here.</div>

A Watchdogs Food Standards Scotland spokesman told The Mirror: “There is no specific European legislation on the chemicals that can be used in paper board, but suppliers of such materials need to demonstrate that it is compliant and it is safe.</div>

“Any pizza boxes used in Scotland must comply.”</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Daily Record has taken the claims one step further, speaking to Scottish marine biology expert Dr Mark Hartl. </div>

The Heriot-Watt University educated Doctor claims the chemical caused “a build-up of testosterone in female snails," which subsequently lead to masculinised females who grew penises.</div>

The BHF says all patients having a STEMI should be taken to a designated heart attack centre with the facilities and staff to deliver round the clock PPCI, seven days a week. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
PPCI involves opening a blocked artery to restore blood flow to the oxygen-starved part of the heart and has helped save thousands of lives since becoming available in the early 2000’s. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The introduction of PPCI followed a ten-year action plan for heart disease (National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease) and prompted system-wide change and led to an increase in the number of hospitals able to deliver this lifesaving treatment.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However the research, published in the journal Heart, also found vast differences in the provision of PPCI treatment between hospitals, ranging from a four - 300 per cent increase over the ten years. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Patients suffering from diabetes, angina or having previously had a heart attack were less likely to receive the treatment, with chronic illness increasing the difficultly of diagnosis.</div>

Living more than 30 kilometres from a hospital also lead to lower PPCI rates, but guidelines state that patients whose treatment with PPCI cannot be provided within two hours of arrival of the emergency services should receive clot busting drugs as an alternative. </div>

And to ensure people do not miss out on the best available treatment, the emergency services need to improve their ability to identify heart attacks in patients who are chronically ill with multiple symptoms.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To save lives, researchers believe all heart attack centres should have the facilities and infrastructure to be able to deliver this routine treatment round the clock. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Professor Peter Weissberg, Medical Director of the BHF, said: “BHF-funded researchers first showed that a heart attack is caused by a blood clot blocking a coronary artery and that the sooner the blockage is opened, the greater the chances of survival.</div>

“It is a testament to the NHS and its investment through the National Service Framework for Coronary Heart Disease that today nine in ten people who suffer a major heart attack in the UK are treated by PPCI. New UK figures from the British Heart Foundation (BHF) show that double the number of people may be living with the deadly inherited gene which causes familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) than previously thought.</div>

However, many of these people have not been identified. Figures show that only around 20,000 people are being treated in specialist clinics for the condition.</div>

If all of the estimated 250,000 people with the FH gene in the UK were identified and treated, as many as 25,000 deaths could be avoided, the BHF said.</div>

It is now calling on NHS services across the country to urgently roll-out a nationwide testing programme for affected families.</div>

<section class="text-description">On average, FH can shorten life expectancy by 20 to 30 years if left untreated. Statins - which lower cholesterol - may be prescribed to adults or children over 10 who have the condition.</section><section class="text-description">Recommendations from the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) say adults with a total cholesterol level above 7.5mmol/l before any treatment should be tested for FH.</section><section class="text-description">It also says the NHS should roll-out FH testing for families where one person has been identified as carrying the gene.</section><section class="text-description">Typically, if one person is found to have FH, half of their brothers and sisters and half of their children will also have the faulty gene and be at a higher risk of early onset of heart disease, including a heart attack.</section><section class="text-description">The BHF said the setting up of FH services has been slow in England and Scotland. <strong>What is a heart attack? </strong></div>

A heart attack (myocardial infarction) occurs when there is a sudden blockage, usually caused by a blood clot, in one of the coronary arteries that supplies the heart muscle with oxygen. The affected muscle infarcts or dies and is replaced by scar tissue.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The extent of the damage depends on the size of the area affected; if a small branch artery is blocked then only a small area of heart muscle dies. However, if a main artery is blocked, then a large area of muscle dies.</div>

The scar tissue does not work as well as the normal heart muscle and so the prognosis is worse after a large heart attack.</div>

A heart attack may occur in people with angina (intermittent short-lived chest pain, usually brought on by exertion, caused by a narrowing in one or more of the arteries that supply the heart muscle), or it may occur out of the blue.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Someone having a heart attack usually experiences severe, persistent (>15 minutes), central or left sided chest pain that may spread to the jaw or the left arm. They may complain of nausea or palpitations, and they may appear pale and/or sweaty and have difficulty breathing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Occasionally a heart attack may feel like indigestion or heartburn. Some patients, especially those with diabetes, may have only mild symptoms or no pain at all. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>What brings on a heart attack? </strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A heart attack is more likely if you are older (over the age of 50), male, and British Asian. Men and women who live in Scotland are six times more likely to die prematurely from a heart attack than people who live in the South West of England. A positive family history of premature CHD (fathers/ brothers under the age of 55 or mothers/ sisters under the age of 65) increases risk.</div>

Smoking, drinking too much alcohol, physical inactivity, a Western diet and obesity all increase the risk of CHD. The same lifestyle factors increase the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes, all of which independently increase risk of CHD.</div>

The British Dietetic Association (BDA) has some excellent food fact sheets that can help patients who are unsure how to modify their diet.</div>
