NEWS NEWS BLOG SPORT brings you the latest news from Old Trafford.
Andrei Kanchelskis believes Louis van Gaal's system is to blame for Wayne Rooney's lack of goals this season.
Rooney, 30, has scored seven Premier League goals this term and is United's top scorer.
But Kanchelskis, who played for the Old Trafford club between 1991 and 1995, thinks the Dutchman's formation is restricting Rooney.
“The reason Wayne Rooney has scored so many goals for Manchester United and at international level is because he got good service," Kanchelskis, speaking exclusively to 888Sport.com, said.
"Now he gets the ball in the middle of the pitch and it’s difficult to score the goals.
"If you get the ball out wide with wingers and play more aggressive there is more chance of scoring goals.
"Now it’s normal for Manchester United to keep possession, pass, pass, backpass. There is no attacking."
He added: "This is a different system and now it is cautious. We played 4-4-2 with wingers – myself, Ryan Giggs, Ronaldo, David Beckham.
"There were so many good wingers. But Van Gaal doesn’t want to play with wingers.”

Manchester United are having to shut one of their stands for their Europa League clash with Midtjylland.
Sales for the game have dropped off and United will not open up the Sir Alex Ferguson stand, which sits 26,000 people.
Manchester United were unable to add to their squad last month - other than the recall of Adnan Januzaj - but according to reports in Portugal they've already agreed a deal for the summer.
Ojogo.pt claims super agent Jorge Mendes has said Benfica youngster Renato Sanches is heading to Old Trafford.
The two European giants have reportedly agreed a deal worth up to £45m for the talented youngster.
Mendes reportedly said Sanches will move for an initial £30m with £15m potentially following in add-ons.
