Kieran Gibbs has been told to fight for his place at Arsenal by Arsene Wenger

At Chelsea, Gary Cahill has been reported to be considering a move to protect his chances of being in Roy Hodgson's England team this summer after falling down the pecking order.

But today, Wenger made a pre-emptive strike at Gibbs, who has been overlooked in favour of Nacho Monreal in recent weeks and been used out of position as a late-impact substitute.

Gibbs had played in the last two England internationals at the end of last year after injury robbed him of a place at the 2014 World Cup.

But Wenger said: "He went through a period that was difficult for him but now he is back with full power and commitment and he is very fit.

"There is competition and I understand what you say but he will get games and he is a quality player.

"Players have that target of the European Championships but the first and the most important one is the club and the achievement of the club. To be at the European Championships is always a consequence of what you have done at the club."
