METAL GEAR Solid 5 director Hideo Kojima is leaving Konami to setup up his own team that will work with Sony to produce a new PS4 exclusive title.
UPDATE ONE: Sony has confirmed that Metal Gear Solid 5's iconic director, Hideo Kojima has entered into an agreement that will ensure that the first gaming title created by the newly formed Kojima Productions will be an console exclusive to PS4.
The new title will not be connected to either new Metal Gear or Silent Hills projects as they are both owned by Konami.
Sony say they will not be investing in Kojima Productions, while its first title will also be available on PC following its release on PS4, although it is currently unclear how long the exclusivity deal would last.
"I will be taking on a new challenge by establishing my own independent studio, and I am thrilled to be able to embark on this journey with PlayStation, who I have continued to work with all these past years," said Hideo Kojima, Game Designer, Kojima Productions.
"I cannot wait to deliver, with PlayStation, a game that will become a compelling franchise."
"PlayStation(R)'s history is one of game innovation and great new franchises," said Andrew House, President and Global CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment.
"Hideo Kojima has been a huge part of that history, and we are therefore delighted that he has chosen to bring his brand new project to life in partnership with PlayStation. We look forward to working with him on an exciting new game and warmly welcome him to the PlayStation family."
That's according to new reports today that claim Kojima plans to launch his own studio and is in talks with Sony to have its first title released on the PlayStation 4 platform.
No information has been released on what the new game will be or how long it would take to be released on the PS4; Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain was a huge project that was first revealed in 2012 and launched in September 2015.
The new reports come from Japanese publication Nikkei, it was widely reported in October this year that Kojima had officially left Konami and was under a non-compete clause until December.
Reports that Kojima Productions had been disbanded by Konami first surfaced in July, with series voice actor Otsuka Akio, tweeting: "[Kojima Productions] has been disbanded.
"It appears that the work that the team has been putting their utmost effort into is nearly complete.
"I’m not exaggerating when I say that I expect it will become their greatest masterpiece.
"I couldn’t help it. I just wanted to say 'Kept you waiting, huh?' But even if this is the end, Metal Gear Solid is immortal!"
It would certainly prove a coup for Sony to have such a project promised for the PS4, which continues to lead the console market in terms of sales over that of the rival Xbox One and Wii U.
The end of 2015 saw Microsoft dominate in terms of exclusive titles being launched before Christmas, including the likes of Rise of the Tomb Raider, Forza 6: Motorsport and Halo 5: Guardians.
