Louis van Gaal admits it's nice to be top of the Premier League |
LOUIS VAN GAAL admits it's 'nice' to be at the top of the Premier League after Manchester United secured a 3-0 win over Sunderland at Old Trafford.
Memphis Depay opened the scoring for United just before half-time.
Skipper Wayne Rooney ended his Premier League goal drought with his second-half strike before Juan Mata sealed the win with his 90th minute goal.
After Manchester City suffered a 4-1 defeat to Tottenham earlier today, rivals United leap-frog Manuel Pellegrini's men to go top of the league.
"It's a nice feeling to be top of the table, it's the first time in my period so I'm happy," said Van Gaal.
"It's always difficult when you play against a team who is only defending and counting on the counter-attack.
"You have to be aware and I have to admit my defence was very good today.
"I was very happy with the goal in extra-time because they punished themselves.
"They were always wasting time and the referee was not reacting to that.
"A goal is the biggest influence in a game and I changed my approach at half-time because of that.
"It became another game but they didn't come at us very much."
