Manchester United expect David de Gea to show his professionalism |
LOUIS VAN GAAL is convinced he can re-ignite David De Gea’s Manchester United career despite the collapse of his dream move to Real Madrid.
De Gea is said to be “devastated” that Real suddenly went cold on a £29million cash plus player deal, with Keylor Navas lined up to come the other way.
He will return to Old Trafford after international duty with Spain with United sources confident De Gea’s pride and professionalism will mean he will buckle down and show Van Gaal he is mentally and physically right to reclaim his place in the team.
Van Gaal left De Gea out of United’s first six matches of the season because he felt he had been distracted by Real’s interest, a claim strongly refuted by the goalkeeper, who has been United's player of the year for the last two seasons.
But it is understood that while United do not expect De Gea to sign the new £200,000-a-week long-term contract that has been on offer for six months, they are confident his professionalism and pride in performance will shine through now the transfer window has closed.
Senior figures at Old Trafford insist De Gea has not been a disruptive influence around the dressing room or training ground, remains popular with his team-mates and has been happy to attend every home game so far this season in his club suit and watch from the stands.
And with mis-givings over Sergio Romero’s ability to be United’s long-term No 1, De Gea is expected return to the team soon – he could be back as early as the next game against Liverpool at Old Trafford a week on Saturday – providing he convinces Van Gaal his head is inthe right place.
Argentina international Romero kept four clean sheets in his first five games but wasn't really tested.
And he conceded two goals at Swansea on Sunday that many pundits believe De Gea would have saved. Question marks have also been raised over Romero's kicking ability.
