Romero -  Started in place of David De Gea and misplaced a couple of passes when under pressure. But the Argentine dealt well with two efforts from Eriksen in the closing stages - 7

Darmian - Taken off with ten minutes to go but it was no reflection of his performance. Confident in defence and took every opportunity to drive forward - 7

Smalling - Developing into a leader in the United defence. Marshalled his team-mates well and dominated his England colleague Harry Kane. Man of the Match - 8

Blind - Starting in an unusual centre-back position, Blind rarely looked uncomfortable despite the presence of Kane - 7

 

Shaw -  After a difficult debut season at Old Trafford with injury, Shaw impressed during pre-season and carried on that form against Spurs. Strong in defence and attack - 7

Carrick - Positioned in the holding role alongside Schneiderlin and was his usual cool and composed self. Taken off for Bastian Schweinsteiger in the second half - 7

Memphis - The new darling of Old Trafford. United fans will have enjoyed his 75min display which was full of energy, skill and guile - 7

Schneiderlin - Caught out early on by Spurs' pressing but grew into the match. Will be a key man for United - 7

 

Mata - Was on the periphery for much of the match. Not suited to a wide role - 6

Rooney - Struggled to get into the match against two tough Spurs centre-backs. Should have opened the scoring but was helped out by Walker - 6

Young - A constant threat to Walker on the left side but got his assist from the right. Justified his new contract - 7
