A study found 3.7 million women are failing to attend the preventative examination, while the UK now has one of the worst survival rates of cervical cancer in the developed world. </div>

The research, carried out by cancer charity Jo’s Trust, discovered a third of 25 - 29 year olds are not attending screening and overall a quarter of all women - 3.7 million - are failing to. </div>

Cases of cervical cancer, which led to the high profile death of Big Brother star Jade Goody in 2009, are also the highest since 1999, with three women dying every day from the disease.</div>

I encourage all eligible women to make that important choice and have their smear test when invited.” </section><section class="text-description">Carrie-Anne Aldridge, a hospital secretary from St George, Bristol, was diagnosed with cervical cancer when she was 26, after her GP decided to carry out tests after she complained of tiredness and some abnormal bleeding.</section><section class="text-description">Ms Aldridge, now 33, had not considered she might have cancer. She recalled: “It didn’t cross my mind. <strong>What is cervical cancer? </strong></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cervix is another name for neck of the womb. Cervix opens in the vagina and the period (and babies) come through the cervix. Cervical cancer literally means cancer of the cervix.</div>

Since screening was introduced in 1988, incidence and mortality related to the cancer have dramatically decreased, and with the recent introduction of the HPV vaccine we are getting closer to preventing most cases of the disease.</div>

Is it transmitted through sex? </strong></section><section class="text-description">Cervical cancer is a very rare consequence of a common viral infection known as human papilloma virus (HPV). </section><section class="text-description">Eighty per cent of men and women get HPV infection at some stage in their life and most would shake it off through their own immunity. HPV can be acquired through sex, but can also be transmitted by intimate genital contact.</section><section class="text-description">The time interval between getting the HPV infection and development of cervical cancer is approximately 15 yrs. This gives plenty of time for prevention through smear tests. Can they be recognised without a doctor present? </strong></section><section class="text-description">Symptoms of cervical cancer include irregular bleeding, particularly after sexual intercourse, persistent vaginal discharge and pelvic pain. Most women with these symptoms however will have other reasons for their symptoms. </section><section class="text-description">A gynaecological examination would be required to make a diagnosis.</section><section class="text-description"><strong>Is it just a young woman's disease? </strong></section><section class="text-description">This is predominantly a young woman’s disease and peak age for risk is 34yrs. </section><section class="text-description">Having said that, it is important to continue with smears till mid-sixties as it can be seen in older women too.</section><section class="text-description"> </section><section class="text-description"><strong>How is it treated? </strong></section><section class="text-description">Cervical precancer and early cervical cancer (microinvasive) is treated by local excision procedure. </section><section class="text-description">This is often done under local anaesthesia and is a simple outpatient procedure. </section><section class="text-description">When the cancer is bigger but still limited to the cervix, it is treated by slightly more extensive surgery such as trachelectomy (removal of cervix, but uterus is conserved so that pregnancy remains an option) or hysterectomy (removal of the womb). </section><section class="text-description">Sometimes, a combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy is required if the cancer has spread beyond the cervix.</section><section class="text-description"><strong>What is the scope for finding a cure for cervical cancer? </strong></section><section class="text-description">Prevention and early diagnosis is important as precancer and early cervical cancer is curable. </section><section class="text-description">Young girls are now offered a vaccine against commonest four types of HPV before they become sexually active. </section><section class="text-description">This HPV vaccine prevents 70 per cent of all cases of cervical cancer. </section><section class="text-description">Vaccination combined with regular screening would reduce the risk of cervical cancer very significantly.</section><section class="text-description">  </section><section class="text-description"><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody>

</section><section class="text-description"> </section><section class="text-description"><strong>How can one avoid it? </strong></section><section class="text-description">Over 3,000 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer in the UK each year.  Yet an alarming 20-30 per cent of women do not attend their cervical screening appointments, and only 50-70 per cent of girls offered the HPV vaccine elect to have the jab. </section><section class="text-description">With this in mind, raising awareness of how these procedures may help prevent the disease is vital.</section><section class="text-description">It is understandable why so many women are missing their tests, with many being either scared or embarrassed about getting it done. However this is often based on lack of experience and isn’t at all accurate - a smear test is a simple five minute examination, and it could potentially save your life; so it is vital to prioritise it. </section><section class="text-description">Women owe this to themselves and their loved ones to be responsible.</section><section class="text-description"><em>#SmearForSmear aims to encourage more women to go for their smear tests. Health experts have backed the calls for family to give positive advice thanks to the growing body of evidence suggesting physical activity manages the side-effects and consequences of cancer treatment, and could reduce the risk of the disease returning or worsening. </div>

The 75-year-old Sheffield-born lad who made good in the world of nightclubs has lived life to the full, rubbing shoulders with countless celebrities while carving out his own success. </div>

“But I didn’t want to be known as ‘poor old Pete who had cancer’. I think I just wanted to avoid all the sympathy. </div>

“But every year since I have felt more and more guilty because, if I had made it known more widely, there’s a chance I might have been able to help other men in a similar position.” </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
His secrecy over cancer is especially poignant, given the recent deaths of rock star David Bowie and Hollywood actor Alan Rickman from tumours which they had not made public. </div>

But there’s another reason for talking openly about the difficulties faced by people of a similar age who are lucky enough to survive cancer or other serious diseases. </div>

It’s the problem of securing travel insurance. </div>

Cancer Research UK says many high street travel insurance firms will only sell insurance if cancer survivors have a doctor’s certificate confirming they no longer have the disease and are fit enough to travel. </div>

It says: “Insurance companies differ on how long you must be free of cancer before they will issue you a policy. </div>

Peter booked what he thought was a prostate exam with his private GP. </div>

But on arrival he discovered he had actually been booked in for a much more expensive whole-body scan, designed to provide a head-to-toe health check. </div>

It was an error which may have saved his life. </div>

“I went ahead with it and then a few days later I got a call from the surgery,” says Peter, who also has two older children from previous marriages. </div>

“Of course, my first thought was that they had indeed found something wrong with my prostate. </div>

“When I saw the specialist he said my prostate was fine but they had found something on my left lung that they were not happy about. I was completely shocked. I have never smoked but I have been working in nightclubs since 1962 and my mother was a chain smoker right up until she died in her seventies. </div>

“My father smoked too but quit in his fifties. I thought ‘this is ridiculous, I’ve never touched cigarettes’. </div>

“But the doctor said it was probably due to years of exposure to second-hand smoke. </div>

It’s since become clear that obesity increases the risk of developing a wide range of common cancers (particularly women’s cancers) including some of the most dangerous and difficult to treat malignancies like pancreatic, liver and gullet cancer.</div>

Obesity triggers pathways that promote cancer development, raising levels of hormones like oestrogen and insulin that can stimulate some cancers to grow faster, but fat cells themselves also produce chemicals called adipokines that can affect cell growth and stimulate chronic inflammation, a condition that’s been linked to cancer development for over 100 years. </div>

<strong>How long do you have to be overweight or obese for the risks to be increased? </strong></div>

DK: Good question – we don’t know the answer to this.  Cancers often develop very gradually in the beginning and many takes years to show themselves, so it makes sense to think that the longer you expose your body to the harmful effects of obesity the greater the chance that cancer will eventually develop.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<strong>Is there a specific type of cancer you're at risk of developing if you're overweight?</strong>  </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
DK: You are 30 per cent more likely to develop post-menopausal breast cancer and for men (not women), 50 per cent more likely to develop colorectal (large bowel) cancer if you are obese.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One in three uterine cancers in the UK (cancer of the womb) are though to be directly due to obesity and for every five BMI points racked up above BMI 23, the risk of uterine cancer goes up by 60 per cent.</div>

<strong>Is it like diabetes, where if you lose weight the condition can be eliminated? </strong></div>

DK: That’s a really interesting but tricky question to answer. The evidence from large population studies that obesity increases the risk of developing a wide range of cancers is pretty overwhelming, so it makes sense to conclude that losing weight should lower your risk of cancer starting.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Once certain cancers have developed, we know that obese cancer patients don’t do as well after cancer treatment, with higher rates of both cancer recurrence and death from cancer.  </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A large study of overweight American breast cancer patients showed that if they could lose even a fairly modest amount of weight after diagnosis, survival appeared to be better than in those who stayed obese, but there isn’t a huge amount research that has looked into this to date.  We don’t yet know how more powerful weight loss treatments such as drugs or surgery might help improve long-term cancer survival.</div>

Greater awareness of the link between cancer and obesity, not just amongst the public but also amongst doctors, many of whom are shocked when the hard facts are explained to them (data that has been available from reliable sources such as Cancer Research UK for years).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If people understood that obesity isn’t just a problem about how you look, but a disease that causes damage to so many different internal body organs maybe we’d all be a bit more proactive about doing something about it.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
That would involve people taking more personal responsibility for not letting those extra few pounds gradually turn into an extra stone or two I the knowledge that if you don’t succeed you are literally putting your life at risk.  </div>

For those who are already so far down the pathway to severe obesity, we need to bite the bullet and offer them rapid access to treatments that will actually work for them (including bariatric surgery) instead of wasting precious time, resource and NHS funds treating them in with the same kinds of low level treatments that can be successful in preventing obesity or treating mild cases.</div>

According to the cancer support charity Macmillan, Barrett's oesophagus is a condition where the cells of the oesophagus grow abnormally - in a small number of people this may gradually develop in to cancer.</div>

The findings were uncovered by the Oesophageal Cancer Westminster Campaign (OCWC) report.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It outlined the huge geographical variations between people receiving treatment for Barrett's oesophagus and early cancer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Using data obtained by the Freedom of Information Act, the report found almost 50 per cent of Londoners receive this treatment compared to a measly six per cent in the East Midlands and a shocking 3.2 per cent in the West Midlands.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The main findings of the report included the fact many trusts are unable to provided detailed data on Barrett’s oesophagus and oesophageal cancer that may indicate inadequacies of the recording and handling of data.</div>

More worryingly, few Trusts were even able to provide evidence of recording AND tracking patients whose Barrett’s oesophagus developed in to oesophageal cancer.</div>

It also revealed only a minority of patients with Barrett’s oesophagus receive a formal diagnosis.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On top of this, there is significant geographical variation in the application of endoscopic therapies for Barrett's oesophagus and early cancer.</div>

On the other hand, the report did reveal the proportion of patients treated with endoscopic therapies for Barrett's oesophagus has increased over the last three years, from 18 per cent to almost a third.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has been estimated that around 950 lives could be saved in this country each year if our survival rates matched the best in Europe.</div>

In order to improve this outcome, the OCWC has recommended the following changes:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Access to endoscopic therapies for Barrett's oesophagus and oesophageal cancer should be improved across the country to prevent the current "postcode lottery" of provision. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Endoscopic Mucosal Resection and Radio Frequency Ablation should be restricted to resectional cancer centres to ensure quality and allow the appropriate discussion of all treatment options.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Greater professional awareness of treatment options.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- A simple best practice pathway should be developed by Clinical Commissioning Groups for Trusts to follow.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- NICE guidelines around early intervention and treatment should be strengthened and structures should be put in place to ensure these are followed.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- There should be enhanced emphasis on, and training for, the diagnosis and treatment of Barrett's oesophagus with the aid of improved diagnosis tools and options.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Trusts should be encouraged to record not only total numbers of those with oesophageal conditions, but also the type and stage.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- There should be better monitoring and recording, and visible annual reporting of all cases and stages of Barrett's, oesophageal cancer and the number of patients progressing from the former to the latter.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- There should be a reassessment of current reimbursement systems and an analysis of whether this creates a barrier to the adoption of some vital treatments.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- All diagnosed cases of Barrett's oesophagus should be registered with the UK National Barrett's Oesophagus Registry to ensure surveillance is managed by one specialist entity across the country.</div>

Chair of the OCWC Tim Underwood said: "The UK has the highest rate of oesophageal cancer patients in the world, with this terrible disease killing 7,000 people every year. </div>

“So much more needs to be done to make sure we improve the way we diagnose and treat this cancer and I believe that the recommendations we've made can make a big step towards saving hundreds of lives. </div>

Barrett's oesophagus sufferer Colette Skilling said: "Having received treatment for Barrett's oesophagus I am worried by the findings of the report. With a significant chance of becoming cancer every patient needs to be diagnosed early and treated in the best way possible.</div>

"I referred myself for the treatment I needed and I am worried that people in other areas of the country may not simply because of their postcode or the knowledge that the treatment is availed. </div>
