SCHALKE chairman Clemens Tonnies has dismissed claims Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Joel Matip.

Club chief sheds light on Liverpool's move for international defender
Schalke defender Joel Matip is attracting interest from Liverpool

Reports in Germany yesterday said that the Reds had lodged a £24million bid for the 24-year-old.
It had previously been suggested Liverpool had agreed in principle a free transfer for Matip this summer.
Jurgen Klopp is looking to strengthen his defence before the transfer window closes and is said to be keen on the Cameroon international.

And he has apparently targeted Matip because of his contractual situation at Schalke with the defender believed to be reluctant to sign a new contract at the club.
However, Schalke chief Tonnies has shed light on Matip's chances of joining Liverpool this month.
"That's a hoax," Tonnies told German website Sport 1.

Schalke appear to have ruled out selling the player in the winter window as they instead look to tie down the defender to a new long-term contract.
Negotiations over a new deal are set to continue at the end of the month with Matip’s agent Alexander Schutt.
Matip, who represented Cameroon at the 2014 World Cup, has made 18 appearances for Schalke so far this season and has scored three goals.
