But The Sun claim United are preparing to change their methods and want to invest more heavily in youth.
It is reported that former FA technical director Dan Ashworth is being lined up for the role.
United want to reignite their failing academy, it is claimed, as they seek to find another generation of youngsters akin to the Class of '92.
 
Dutchman Van Gaal has been forced to use youngsters in the Premier League this season to cover for a string of injuries.
and Cameron Borthwick-Jackson have been drafted in after injuries to Luke Shaw, Ashley Young, Antonio Valencia, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo.
Van Gaal himself is not secure in his position as United manager and reportedly might leave by the start of next season.
 
United moved to deny that the 64-year-old had handed in his resignation after Saturday's 1-0 loss to Southampton at Old Trafford.
Sacking Van Gaal and employing a director of football would mark a big change of attitude for the club, who enjoyed huge success during Sir Alex Ferguson's 26 years in charge as manager.
