Guys Hiddink says he cannot guarantee midfielder Cesc Fabregas a place in his Chelsea XI.
Fabregas enjoyed a stellar season last term where he helped the Blues to a Premier League title in his debut campaign at Stamford Bridge.
But this season the Spaniard has endured a rough time, with fans partly blaming him for the sacking of manager Jose Mourinho.
The 28-year-old’s form has also dipped and interim boss Hiddink says he must prioritise the “balance” in Chelsea’s midfield over the needs of individual players.
"There are games where we want to have another tactical balance defensively," Hiddink said.
"For me it's not just a goalkeeper and 10 outfield players; it's also that we have potential good players until the 14th or 15th man. When they are needed we'll put them in the lineup.
"One time it's Mikel, one time it's Cesc or other people. That depends on the tactics and the strengths of the opponent, especially in midfield.
“(Fabregas) can play the No. 10 position. He's smart in the final third with his passes but he has also played a lot of games just in front of the defence. He can play either position.
"There's no preferred role but it depends on the strengths of the opponent in midfield, whether we choose a more attack-oriented player or defensive-oriented player. It's not just one fixed team."
Meanwhile, Christian Atsu is back in training at Chelsea after having his loan deal at Bournemouth terminated.
Atsu, 23, joined the Cherries on a season-long loan last summer.
But he was restricted to just two appearances - both away in the Capital One Cup and where he failed to complete a full 90 minutes.
Yet despite his lack of game time boss Hiddink is set to throw the Ghanaian straight into his first-team plans at Chelsea, claims the Daily Star.
Atsu is yet to make an appearance for the Blues but could make the bench for tomorrow’s Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
