And Express Sport understands Jose Mourinho is waiting in the wings to take over should the Dutchman be given the boot.
Mourinho is understood to have lined up his first United signing already - Galatasaray midfielder Wesley Sneijder.

Sneijder signed a new three-year deal at Gala in October but Mourinho is hoping the lure of the Premier League will make him re-think his options.
Adnan Januzaj could return to Old Trafford before his loan spell at Borussia Dortmund has run it's course, it is claimed.
German newspaper Ruhr Nachrichten say the Belgium international is losing patience with Dortmund boss Thomas Tuchel over his lack of playing time.
He has started just three Europa League games this season and may force his way back into United's attacking plans in January.
