THE recent election in Myanmar (formerly Burma) has resulted in an overall majority for the party led by Aung San Suu Kyi.
 
1. Her party also won a majority in the 1990 general election but the military government nullified the results. 
2. In the period from 1989-2010 Aung San Suu Kyi was under house arrest for 15 of the 21 years. 
3. In 1989 Burma changed its name to Myanmar. The capital also changed its name from Rangoon to Yangon but in 2006 moved to Nay Pyi Taw. 
4. The currency unit in Myanmar is the kyat which is divided into 100 pyas. 
5. The only Nobel Prize ever awarded to Burma was Aung San Suu Kyi’s Peace Prize in 1991.
