Chelsea fans showed their loyalty to Jose Mourinho during the defeat at Stoke on Saturday |
CHELSEA fans loyal to Jose Mourinho have bought the manager more time to turn the club's fortunes around, according to reports.
Mourinho, 52, is under pressure to get results after a disastrous start to the season.
Owner Roman Abramovich is understood to be considering his options following the 1-0 loss at Stoke on Saturday.
The Russian billionaire has sacked Mourinho once before - back in 2007 when Chelsea were in better shape than they are now.
But the Daily Star claim the difference for Abramovich this time around is Chelsea fans' backing of their head coach.
Eight years ago there were calls for Mourinho to walk but the public display of loyalty has convinced Abramovich to retain his man.
That is despite off-field problems with Mourinho this season, which stretch from the public spat with and eventual departure of first-team doctor Eva Carneiro, criticism of Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger and fines amounting to £90,000 and a stadium ban for his behaviour with match officials.
As News News Blog Sport revealed this morning, Diego Simeone has joined the shortlist Abramovich has drawn up to potentially replace Mourinho.
Atletico Madrid boss Simeone would, however, only be available in the summer.
Brendan Rodgers, Roberto Di Matteo and Guus Hiddink are the other names in Abramovich's mind and they could be hired as interim coaches until a summer swoop for Simeone.
