MANCHESTER UNITED will have to pay in excess of £45million if they want to sign John Stones, according to reports.

The Manchester Evening News claim United have had Stones watched this season, with the view of making a bid in the summer.
Chelsea tried to sign him in the last transfer window and are understood to be keen on taking him to Stamford Bridge still, while Barcelona are now interested as well.

As a result, the report claims United understand they will need to stump up a British record fee to stand any chance of landing him.
It also claims United are yet to make any official enquiry and that their interest has not advanced beyond keeping tabs on the England international.

However, the price is unlikely to put the Red Devils off as executive vice chairman Ed Woodward has already expressed his desire to continue to spend big.
Paying £27million to sign Luke Shaw might be a signal of their intentions, with the cub happy to pay over the odds for the best English talent.
And Stones, 21, could be keen to leave Goodison Park in the summer after trying to force the move by handing in a transfer request in August.
