A new study has found links between cooked meats and kidney cancer |
THINK AGAIN before lighting up the barbecue, warn experts, as studies show well-cooked meats may increase the risk of kidney cancer.
Experts have given out yet another warning to reduce our red meat consumption, which may be a bit hard to swallow if you’re partial to a chargrilled fillet.
A diet high in well-cooked meats may increase the risk of developing kidney cancer, the study has claimed.
The research, published in the American Cancer Society journal, reveals a link between meat-cooking carcinogens and the dreaded disease.
The alarming findings come just weeks after the World Health Organisation warned red meat can cause bowel cancer.
A diet high in well-cooked meats may increase the risk of developing kidney cancer, say experts |
The study, from the University of Texas, examined the eating habits of 659 people with renal cell carcinoma (RCC) - the most common form of kidney cancer in adults.
Their diets were compared with that of 699 cancer-free people.
The findings revealed kidney cancer patients consumed higher amounts of meat and processed foods than people who do not have the disease.
Dr Xifeng Wu, professor of epidemiology and senior author of the study, said: “We found elevated cancer risk associated with both meat intake and meat-cooking carcinogens.
Researchers advise consuming meats in moderation, as part of well-balanced diet |
“Our findings support reducing consumption of meat, especially meat cooked at high temperatures or over an open flame as a public health intervention to reduce RCC risk and burden.”
Researchers also found individuals with specific genes are more susceptible to the “harmful compounds” created when cooking on high temperatures.
The good news is, implementing small changes can help create a cancer-friendly diet.
Researchers advise consuming meats in moderation, as part of well-balanced diet, rather than removing it completely.
Around 10,000 people are diagnosed with kidney cancer each year in Britain.
Renal cell carcinoma is among the most common.
