HOUSTON DYNAMO boss Owen Coyle has backed Patrick Vieira to succeed as manager of New York City FC.
The former Arsenal captain was confirmed as Jason Kreis' successor yesterday and will leave his current coaching role at Manchester City to take up the role on January 1.
"I am delighted to take up the role of Head Coach of New York City FC," he said.
"To work with this squad, with Claudio Reyna and Rob Vartughian and the fantastic support team that is in place, is an exciting prospect for any coach.
"This established football set up, together with a passionate and loyal fan base, located in a special city which I know well, makes for an unparalleled opportunity that I am delighted to seize with both hands. I cannot wait to get started.”
However, former Wigan and Bolton boss Coyle, who now manages in the MLS, has warned Vieira the transition will be 'tough'.
"I don't think it's down to me to give him advice, but Patrick is such an honourable figure, he's an outstanding player," he told Sky Sports News.
"He's been working at Manchester City, and [sporting director] Claudio Reyna is there as well, so Claudio will be able to help him on that route.
"I would say that as much as the team will give him all the bits and pieces, nothing will beat the experience of actually learning on the job and it's a tough environment."
