GILLINGHAM defender John Egan is confident his high-flying side can hold onto top spot in the table.
The Gills ended a four-game winless run and moved back to the summit with victory over Bury.
After finishing 12th last season they continue to exceed expectations, but Egan is not surprised they are challenging for the title.
"I don't think we have come up against anyone who is a million miles better than us this year," he said.
"Every team we've come up against I feel like we can beat. You might think we are overachieving but there's a nice self-belief in this group.
"We're flying, we're exceeding expectations but we're not letting up."
Justin Edinburgh's side could extend their advantage at the top when they visit second-placed Coventry on Saturday.
But Egan admits consistency will be the most crucial factor in the race for promotion.
"In this league anything can happen. There are crazy results every week," he added.
"You don't win anything in November. We just have to try and maintain the consistency and that will be key to us mounting a challenge this year."
The Gills are unbeaten at Priestfields this season but got off to a terrible start when Leon Clarke headed Bury in front after four minutes.
But just six minutes later the hosts were ahead, through Dominic Samuel and Egan, before Emmanuel Osadebe's brilliant individual effort secured the points.
Bury have won just once in their last six league games but remain sixth in the table following their promotion from League Two last term.
Defender Peter Clarke said: "There is a bit of room for improvement and if we can do that then who knows what the rest of the season will bring.
"The league starts to take shape at around this time. We're happy with where we're placed at the minute."
