Danny Ings is out for the season |
LIVERPOOL manager Jurgen Klopp has been left reeling as striker Danny Ings was effectively ruled out for the season after suffering a cruciate knee injury in training.
Ings was injured on Wednesday at Melwood and the blow follows on from the news that youngster Joe Gomez will also miss the rest of the campaign with the same injury.
It represents a nightmare start for Klopp, who takes charge of his first game on Saturday when Liverpool travel to Tottenham with just two fit strikers in Divock Origi and Daniel Sturridge.
Ings has impressed since arriving from Burnley, for a fee which has yet to be determined by an independent transfer committee, and made his England debut against Lithuania in Vilnius on Monday.
He played 31 minutes in a 3-0 win having missed last Friday’s victory over Estonia with an ankle injury.
Ings was able to walk off the training pitch and was unaware as to the seriousness of the injury until he underwent a scan this morning.
He initially thought he had damaged his meniscus and would be out for between six to eight weeks because he was not in serious pain.
The setback comes with Liverpool skipper Jordan Henderson having broken his metatarsal in training and with Christian Benteke and Roberto Firmino also absent through injury.
In the case of Gomez, Klopp had claimed that Liverpool did not receive “perfect information” from the Football Association over his knee injury.
Scans have confirmed that the youngster damaged his anterior cruciate knee ligament playing for England U21s against Kazakhstan on Tuesday night in Coventry.
The injury was initially described as a knock, but Liverpool quickly realised the seriousness of the situation when Gomez returned to the club on Wednesday.
His injury is more serious than that of Ings.
