Arsenal tried to sign Karim Benzema in the summer but they may have now kissed their chances goodbye |
THE news that no Arsenal fan wanted to hear.
Chief scout Brian McDermott believes there won't be any world class strikers available in January for his side to sign.
The Gunners were heavily linked with a move for Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema in the summer but a deal never materialised.
Wenger only brought in one player during the transfer window - Petr Cech moving from rivals Chelsea.
Brian McDermott says Arsene Wenger will only spend money if it's absolutley necessary |
Arsenal have reportedly shown interest in Edinson Cavani, Gonzalo Higuain, Anthony Modeste and Hakan Calhanoglu in recent weeks.
But McDermott insists Arsenal fans shouldn't get their hopes up about signing any big names this winter.
"Generally it's a good squad. He signed a fantastic goalkeeper," he told Sky Sports.
"The manager won't spend unless he thinks its absolutely necessary.
"The scouting structure at Arsenal is phenomenal.
"We all know who the top strikers in the world are. Can you get them to come? They won't be available in January that's an absolute certainty."
Wenger has been experimenting with his forward options, playing Olivier Giroud and Theo Walcott, while Danny Welbeck is expected to be out of action until at least the new year.
