Angel Di Maria (right) played for PSG against Real Madrid last night |
PARIS SAINT-GERMAIN have not developed since signing Angel Di Maria, claims one of the club's former players.
PSG spent £44million on Di Maria this summer after agreeing to end the Argentina international's 12-month spell at Manchester United.
He has scored three goals in nine appearances for the club but was subbed off in PSG's 0-0 Champions League draw with former side Real Madrid last night.
And the result, plus Di Maria's display, has led to criticism of the club in France, with former player-turned-pundit Jean-Michel Larqué voicing his frustration.
"(PSG) are in the business of image and communication. We sell a dream," he told RMC.
"I do not want to break this dream of the fans but I did not think PSG seriously increased their chances of winning the Champions League when we announced the signing of Angel Di Maria."
United recycled the Di Maria sale money in new striker Anthony Martial, who cost the Red Devils £36m up front, with £22m agreed in bonuses and add-ons.
Manager Louis van Gaal also signed Memphis Depay, Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger in the summer to boost his midfield ranks.
As for PSG, they sit second in Group A of the Champions League, locked on points with Madrid and four ahead of third-place Malmö.
And while Di Maria fielded criticism from fans, pundits and even PSG boss Laurent Blanc, his team-mate Raphael Varane stood up for the winger.
"He is an exceptional player, with enormous speed and quality of passing," Varane said.
"He can bring his experience to a big club like Paris."
