Gary Neville teased fellow pundit Jamie Carragher following Man United win against Liverpool |
GARY NEVILLE has teased fellow pundit Jamie Carragher over Manchester United's 3-1 win over Liverpool.
Neville and Carragher will host Sky Sports Monday Night football clash between West Ham and Newcastle tomorrow evening where they will address all the major talking points from the game.
Neville, who played for Man United between 1991 and 2011, suggested Carragher might want to give the show a miss and take the night off.
However, Carragher, who made 508 appearances for rival club Liverpool, deflected his attention away from his former club's defeat by jokingly vowing to speak about the stalemate between West Brom and Southampton.
United won the game thanks to goals from Daley Blind, a penalty from Ander Herrera and a magical debut strike from £36m signing Anthony Martial.
But one of the other major talking points was the return of David De Gea who made a number of impressive saves following his return to the starting line-up, and legendary full-back Neville believes he will be essential player in Louis van Gaal's Premier League title bid.
"It's a big thing for Manchester United to have him stay for the rest of this season," he said on The Gary Neville Podcast.
"If Manchester United had Sergio Romero in the net today - it's no disrespect to him - maybe one or two of those moments Liverpool had wouldn't have been saved.
"He made a really good save at the end from Jordon Ibe, so I think when you look at it and think about De Gea [against Liverpool], he will save Manchester United points.
"Graeme Souness put a number on it before the game - I think he said 15 points. Whether it'll be that much, we don't know, but what I would say is that he will definitely win them matches.
"He's a match-winning goalkeeper, and Manchester United have had too many experiences - good and bad over the years - around goalkeepers.
"When they had Peter Schmeichel and Edwin van der Sar, it's looked rock solid. De Gea in the last couple of years has been fantastic."
Meanwhile, Jamie Carragher was critical of Brendan Rodgers positional tactics following the defeat and pinpointed the lack of support Christian Benteke - who scored a fantastic overhead kick - has in their current 4-3-3 formation.

"There's not enough help for Benteke," Carragher told Sky Sports.
"Ings came in and I said before the game it must be two up front and they must be playing a diamond formation, but they were still playing 4-3-3.
"I don't understand what the point was in playing Danny Ings in that wide position. He didn't give the support to Benteke.
"I don't understand this obsession with playing 4-3-3. Brendan Rodgers came to the club wanting to play 4-3-3 and it didn't work.
"The great season they had was with two strikers and how they got them into the team is down to the manager. They've got a lot of strikers, no wide players, and he continues to play 4-3-3."
