Mauricio Pochettino is in the market for a new striker |
IT COULD have been Swiss Toni sitting there before us, musing: "Signing a striker is like making love to a beautiful woman." Instead it was Spurs manager Mauricio Pochettino getting all romantic about the search for a new frontman.
The scene at Tottenham's Enfield training ground was straight out of the BBC's Fast Show, in which bequiffed car dealer Swiss Toni struts his stuff.
Lovelorn Pochettino has been searching for that elusive woman - sorry, striker - all summer, and last night he moaned: "It is never easy. There are always a lot of players around the world that you can sign.
"But it's like when you are in love with some lady - there are a lot of women around the world but you want only one. Sometimes it is impossible. It's about love. In football it is the same."
So far, West Brom's Saido Berahino and South Korea international Son Heung Min of Bayer Leverkusen have said they don't want to dance, although Son may change his mind over the weekend.
Pochettino did not reveal whether he would be resorting to bunches of flowers and love poetry, but he did say: "It is important to add the player with the right profile, who can play under our style, our philosophy.
"Tottenham have had a lot of examples of cases where maybe it was better to play young players. Signing players of the wrong profile is a mistake, because you pay for that for a long time.
"I want to be 99 per cent sure it is the right player for us. Sometimes it is difficult for people to understand why we do not sign a player, but it is important to have the conviction that you have the right player."
With Spurs searching for their first win after three games, a blow to Pochettino is that new £10m forward Clinton N'Jie is still not fit to start against Everton tomorrow.
Pochettino said: "He was injured in pre-season with Lyon and his fitness levels are not yet there."
