Jonathan De Guzman is set to sign for Sunderland despite being snubbed by the Napoli midfielder |
SUNDERLAND are set to sign Jonathan de Guzman less than a week after being snubbed by the Napoli midfielder.
The Holland international is ready to join the Black Cats on a season's loan with a view to a permanent £3.5m deal, but Emanuele Giaccherini won't be heading the other way after the Serie A side turned down a chance to take the Italian midfielder on loan.
Canadian-born De Guzman is set for a second spell in the Premier League after a two-year loan stint at Swansea, where he helped the Welsh club lift the League Cup in 2013.
The 27-year-old has enjoyed less success at Napoli, starting just 12 games in Serie A last season.
Marseille have also shown an interest, but Sunderland are confident of beating the French side to land the former Feyenoord star.
Boss Dick Advocaat wants three new faces before the transfer window closes next week in a bid to kickstart his side's stuttering campaign, having expressed his frustration at a lack of arrivals.
The Black Cats sit second-bottom in the Premier League with one point from their first three games.
Their defensive failings were again highlighted in the 6-3 Capital One Cup victory over League Two Exeter, and owner Ellis Short has been forced to respond to criticism from fans over the level of his financial backing for Advocaat.
Sunderland's net spend this summer is less than £10m, and they hope to recoup a further £4.5m by offloading out-of-favour Giaccherini.
The way is now clear for Bologna to sign the 30-year-old after Napoli turned down a chance to sign the injury-prone winger.
