Manchester United are reported to have bid for Ilkay Gundogan |
MANCHESTER UNITED have had a bid for Borussia Dortmund star Ilkay Gundogan rejected, according to reports in Germany.
Gundogan has been strongly linked with Arsenal, while Juventus and Bayern Munich are also thought to be interested.
The news could come as a bit of a surprise as United manager Louis van Gaal is though to be more keen on bolstering his attacking options.
Barcelona's Neymar is reported to be on his radar, while Southampton forward Sadio Mane is a target.
However, Gundogan is one of Europe's most highly rated defensive midfielders and German publication Express.de claim Van Gaal might want more competition for new signings Morgan Schneiderlin and Bastian Schweinsteiger.
The 24-year-old joined Dortmund from Nurnberg for a fee in the region of £2.8million in 2011.
He has since made 117 appearances for the club but suffered injury setbacks in each of the last two campaigns.
A Germany international, he has been capped 11 times by his country.
Gunners boss Arsene Wenger may also be prompted into a move if he responds to criticism from fans.
Wenger has come under fire for failing to sign any competition for Francis Coquelin but is adamant he does not need new players.
