Kristen Stewart and Jesse Eisenberg |
KRISTEN STEWART'S new film American Ultra has bombed at the US box office finishing a terrible sixth place on its opening weekend.
The Jesse Eisenberg comedy action film seemed to herald return to the mainstream for the Twilight actress, after a succession of obscure indie flicks.
But the film's terrible results, despite a heavy marketing campaign and backing from the studio, seem to indicate that Stewart is no longer a big box office draw.
Stewart is still best known for the hugely successful Twilight franchise. In comparson, 2012's final film, Breaking Dawn Part 2 took $830 million (£529 million) at the global box office.

Stewart's American Ultra co-star Jesse Eisenberg is poised to star as Lex Luthor in Batman V Superman, but the weekend results seem to indicate that neither actor is able to 'carry' a film, without some sort of surrounding book or comic book hype.
It seems even more disappointing considering that Stewart still features on this year's Forbes list of the world's top ten highest earning actresses.
Meanwhile. the film's screenwriter, Max Landis, has been quick to defend American Ultra on Twitter, blaming the remake and sequel-focused industry for its box office failure.
The film debutted in a poor sixth place behind Straight Outta Compton, Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation, Sinister 2, Hitman: Agent 47 and The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
“I’m left with an odd thing here, which is that American Ultra lost to a sequel, a sequel reboot, a biopic, a sequel and a reboot,” he said on Twitter.
“It seems the reviews didn’t even matter, the MOVIE didn’t matter. The argument that can/will be made is: big-level original ideas don’t $.”
“Is trying to make original movies in a big way just not a valid career path anymore for anyone but Tarantino and Nolan?”
However critics have given poor to mixed reviews for the stoner comedy, which only has an aggregated rating on 46% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Stewart herself, seems to have been faring far better from critics after her frequent maulings in the Twilight films – even as her box office performances continue to plummet.
Stewart is best known for the hugely successful Twilight franchise. 2012's final film, Breaking Dawn Part 2 took $830 (£529 million) million at the global box office.
The same year she featured in her last last big budget lead role in Snow White and the Huntsman, which grossed a disappointing $395 million on a hefty $170 million budget. Not only was Stewart utterly overshadowed by Charlize Theron's powerhouse performance as the wicked Queen Ravenna, her affair with the film's married director, Rupert Sanders, caused a huge scandal.
Since then she has been garnering praise from critics for a succession of smaller, indie films like Clouds of Sils Maria, which tool a tiny $1.8 million (£1.15 million) at the box office.

The actress also received praise from critics and from her Oscar-winning co-star Julianne Moore for her sensitively drawn performance in last year's Still Alice.
But it has been a long time in Hollywood terms since she was the lead actress in a commercial hit.
Stewart and Eisenberg will be reunited as a couple again in the latest Woody Allen film which is currently shooting in Los Angeles.
Fingers crossed for next time, guys…
