Ander Herrera [right] believes Wayne Rooney [left] is back to his best |
ANDER HERRERA reckons Wayne Rooney is back to his best and ready to lead Manchester United to glory again.
Rooney ended his goal drought in style with a stunning hat-trick to crush Bruges in Belgium on Tuesday night.
The England captain inspired United to a 4-0 triumph and 7-1 aggregate win to book his side's place in the group stages.
Rooney had gone 10 games without a goal and was feeling the heat before his goal blitz, and now Herrera has backed his skipper to pile the pain on more opponents and give Louis van Gaal's men the best possible chance of landing silverware.
Herrera said: "It was a great night for Wayne. He is our captain and leader and we are happy for him.
"When he scores everything is always easier for us. He is always helping us and thinking about the team.
"It is important for him to score, but it is also important for him that we win.
"We have to go step by step, but of course, we are representing one of the biggest clubs in the world. The history of the club says we have to fight for all the trophies.
"We can enjoy the draw now and take Manchester United were they deserve to be."
Rooney gave-up the chance to notch a fourth goal when he handed a penalty chance to Javier Hernandez to take.
Hernandez missed, but Herrera reckons the unselfish act shows how Rooney always puts the team before himself.
The Spanish midfielder added: "It was a great gesture. It was unselfish, but this shows he is always thinking of the team.
"He knew it was important for Chicharito to score, so he gave the ball to him.
"When you are a star, that kind of thing is not so usual, so we are lucky to have Wayne with us."
