'Why are we so scared of teenage sexuality?' says actress Bel Powley
Bel Powley believes teenage girls need to express their sexuality
"Teenage girls get horny and it's nothing to be ashamed of," says Bel Powley as she attacks the 18 rating for her new film Diary of a Teenage Girl about a 15-year-old's affair with her mother's boyfriend.
"People are scared of teenage girls and teenage sexuality," Powley says.

"They don’t want to admit that it exists.”

Although she is 23 now, the British actress feel passionately about the feelings of isolation and disapproval facing young women trying to explore and understand their sexuality.

Alexander Skarsgard looked unrecognisable in drag at the San Franciso premiererag
“I think just in society in general, female sexuality amongst teenage girls is a taboo subject,” Powley told Variety.

“We don’t want to acknowledge that teenage girls get horny and want to have sex, and in turn that’s very damning to young women, because it makes you feel very alone."
The controversy is heightened because Powley plays 15-year-old Minnie in the film when the age of consent in the UK is 16.

Her sexual awakening centres on her affair with her mother's boyfriend, played by Alexander Skarsgard.

"Like Minnie says, ‘Am I a freak for having sexual feelings'" Powley continues.

"It’s never shown in movies. Women are put in boxes: the virgin waiting for Prince Charming, or the high school slutty girl, or the asexual geeky girl.
"No one is really those things.”
Even so, Powley and her comments were almost upstaged at the film's San Fancisco premier by the shocking sight of her 6'4 co-star Alexander Skarsgard hitting the red carpet in full drag.
Diary of a teenage Girl is Powley's second high-profile role as an outrageous teen.

Earlier this year she was seen as a young, fun-seeking Princess Margaret in the historical fiction, A Royal Night Out.

While she clearly relishes such challenging roles she also admits that she is relieved that she has grown out of her youthful emotional excesses.

“When you’re a teenager, your essence is so specific to being a teenager, and everything becomes so extreme," she says.
"Your emotions are on the surface and you oscillate between different things at one time." Powley adds.

"If someone touches your t**, you’re like, ‘I love you.’ And then if someone breaks up with you, you’re like, ‘I’m going to die.’

"You’re like that all the time. It’s exhausting.”

In response to Powley's comments, the British Board of Film Classification defended its decision to rate the film 18 because it contained strong sex scenes, “strong verbal sex references” and more than 40 uses of the word “f***".
