STEVEN SPIELBERG'S new film Ready Player One is being linked to the return of screen legend Gene Wilder.

The Willy Wonka star hasn't acted since a brief appearance on sitcom Will & Grace way back in 2003.
Spielberg is said to be keen to lure the 82-year-old actor out of retirement for his latest science fiction blockbuster.

Ready Player One is based on the book by Ernest Cline and tells the story of an eccentric billionaire, James Halliday,  who has created an a virtual reality universe, Oasis. Oasis is a globally networked virtual utopia where users lead idyllic alternate lives.
When Halliday dies, he leaves his fortune to whoever can follow a bewildering track on clues and solve a complex puzzle.

The high stakes treasure hunt inspires young dreamer Wade Watts, who spends most of his free time trying to escape his dreary, dangerous real life by logging into Oasis.

Unfortunately immensely powerful and dangerous forces also want to solve the puzzle and control the virtual world.

The film echoes Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory with its story of an impoverished boy who could defy the odds and achieve unimaginable wealth and power.
Industry insiders claim that Wilder is being pursued to play Halliday.
Coincidentally, Steven Speilberg is also working on another teenage blockbuster, The BFG, based on another of Dahl's iconic children's book.

Competing rumours also suggest that the director might be chasing Wilder to voice the central character of the Big Friendly Giant.

Either way, it would be a fairy tale to have the Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein star back on the big screen.

The BFG will be released in cinemas in July 2016.

Ready Player One has been slated for release in December 2017.
