Maddison, 19, has sprung to the attention of a host of Premier League clubs with Tottenham also interested in the attacking midfielder.
Liverpool have strong links with Coventry having sent Ryan Kent on loan to the League One club before recalling him last month due to an injury crisis.
Talks took place during the transfer window, but it will be after the end of the season that an agreement will now be reached.
Maddison has made 31 appearances for hometown club Coventry.
