DANNY MURPHY has slammed Liverpool's reported attempts to sign Southampton's Shane Long.
The Daily Mirror reported earlier today that Saints had rejected an £8million bid for Long from Liverpool.
And Murphy, who made 187 Premier League appearances for the Anfield outfit, was aghast at the claims.
"Shane Long? Really?! No, no, no, no, no," Murphy told talkSPORT.
“There’s no point bringing in players who aren’t better than what you’ve already got.
“Would you suggest Long is a better player than Christian Benteke? I don’t think so."
The Reds spent £32.5m on the Belgian last summer but he has struggled to adapt to manager Jurgen Klopp's high-energy pressing game.
The striker has seven goals this season in all competitions but has often been used only as a substitute under the German boss.
In Sunday's defeat to Manchester United he didn't appear until the 81st minute.
And while Benteke himself has copped much of the flak for his seemingly lazy playing style, Murphy believes the team have to tweak Klopp's gameplan when he is on the pitch.
“Liverpool have to play Benteke and use him better," Murphy added.
"I was surprised how long it took for Klopp to bring Benteke on.
"The way Liverpool are playing at the moment isn’t really suited to what Benteke is good at…yet he’s still their top goalscorer. You have to play to his strengths."
