MANCHESTER UNITED have been dealt a blow after their approach for Tottenham's head of coaching and player development was rejected, according to reports.

Tottenham reject approach from Manchester United for key man
John McDermott has rejected an approach to move to Old Trafford

The Red Devils are looking to overhaul their ailing academy and revamp their youth set-up after a decline in recent seasons.
Under Sir Alex Ferguson United had one of the most productive academies in English football, bringing through the famous class of 92.
But since the era of David Beckham, Gary Neville and Paul Scholes, the Red Devils have struggled to churn out top talent.
And the club have now fallen behind their rivals Manchester City, who have recently invested in a state-of-the-art £200million complex.

United's current head of youth player recruitment, Derek Langley, is set to leave the club after 16 years.
McDermott has been credited with bringing through the likes of Harry Kane, Danny Rose and Ryan Mason at White Hart Lane.
And it is believed to be his strong working relationship with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino that has been one of the deciding factors in his decision to reject United's offer.
