MAURICIO POCHETTINO says he is “not surprised” that Real Madrid are being linked with a move for striker Harry Kane – even if his response left the Argentinian a bit tongue-tied.
It was reported yesterday that the Tottenham striker is one of Zinedine Zidane’s first targets having replaced Rafa Benitez as boss of the Galacticos after recovering from a slow start to the season to prove that last year’s meteoric rise was no flash in the pan.
Pochettino is relaxed about the interest, taking the link as a compliment rather than a threat – although he corpsed in embarrassed laughter after making a mess of stating the club’s position on the matter.
“I didn’t see it,” he said. “It’s a rumour. It doesn't surprise me: I think Harry Kane is one of the best strikers in Europe, or in the world.
“It would not surprise me if some big clubs are interested in me. But it's only a rumour.
“He is not for sale. And the good thing is that Harry wants to stay with us. This is the most important thing.
“Sometimes a manager or head coach can say a 'player is not for sale', but the player wants to leave. There are a lot of examples of that.
“But in this case, the good thing is that Tottenham want to sell him. Aargh! I mean ‘don’t want’ to sell him!
“Anyway, Harry Kane wants to stay with us.”
