Newcastle owner Mike Ashley has given the green light to a double move for Townsend and West Brom hitman Saido Berahino.

But while the Toon's chances of signing Berahino appear unlikely, it looks like they could land Townsend.

The Mirror report McClaren is pushing for a £10m deal for Townsend and is increasingly confident of securing the England international this month.

It is claimed fresh talks have taken place between Spurs and Newcastle, who are hopeful of striking an agreement.

Townsend, 24, is believed to be keen on moving to St James' Park to bolster his chances of making Roy Hodgson's England squad at Euro 2016.

After falling out with Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino over a bust-up with a member of the club's coaching staff, Townsend has no future at White Hart Lane.

And Newcastle are ready to spend, with Ashley prepared to take spending under McClaren past the £100m mark.

The Magpies spent around £53m in the summer on Georginio Wijnaldum, Chancel Mbemba, Florian Thauvin and Aleksandar Mitrovic.

And they have already splashed out £17m on signing Jonjo Shelvey and Henri Saivet from Swansea and Bordeaux this January transfer window.

Ashley was ready to pay £18m for Berahino but that move could be dead in the water as he apparently wants a move to London.
