MANCHESTER UNITED chose to sign Robin van Persie despite agreeing a deal for Robert Lewandowski, according to reports.
The Independent claim United opted for Van Persie over Lewandowski in the summer of 2012.
It is said United had agreed the framework of a deal with Lewandowski's then club Borussia Dortmund, but chose to sign Van Persie for £22.5million from Arsenal instead.
The Independent add United boss Louis van Gaal also tried to sign the Poland international from Bayern Munich last summer after identifying him as a priority striker target.

The Red Devils eventually landed £60million teenager Anthony Martial on deadline day after Bayern made it clear they did not want to sell.
United remain interested in Lewandowski, but it is said he is now waiting on interest from Real Madrid.
The Bernabeu outfit are facing a transfer ban by FIFA but the 27-year-old is reportedly prepared to wait until this is lifted at the end of the 2016-17 season to make his move.
