United boss Louis van Gaal is tracking Mane as he looks to add pace and trickery to his side.

Van Gaal has admitted he may need to sign strikers in January and Mane appears to fit the bill.

But according to the Mirror, United have seen a fresh attempt to land the 23-year-old turned down by Southampton.

Chelsea and Bayern Munich are also keen on Mane, who is valued at around £30million.

It is claimed Mane will wait until the summer to push for a move, having made it clear he will not sign a new contract at St Mary's.

United were hopeful of landing the Senegal international after Saints boss Ronald Koeman criticised him for turning up late for his side's defeat to Norwich.

"I feel let down – not just me but much more the players, his team-mates because we are a club who likes to treat everybody very respectfully," Koeman said.

"You have responsibilities as a player to the fans, to your team-mates, to the board, to the technical staff.

"That is painful. It is so unnecessary what happened today. I am angry about what happened today. I am angry about players who are not focussed and not concentrating on the club. That is my worst disappointment of today."
