CHRIS SMALLING has challenged Manchester United to be breathing down the neck of the Premier League leaders come the end of January.
Arsenal are currently atop of the table, with the Red Devils nine points back in sixth place.
Louis van Gaal's men have been routinely criticised for their style of play this season, and they are without a win in their past eight games in all competitions.
The Premier League is proving to be one of the most unpredictable in years, and Smalling thinks there is no reason why United can't close the gap on leaders soon.
"You just need to be consistent and we need to get back to that, like we were earlier in the season when we were top," Smalling told the club's official website.
"With any consistency in this league, you can shoot up the table and create a gap.
“As I say, it wasn’t long ago when we were at the top.
"The league is that close – if you get three wins on the bounce then you can be within touching distance of the lead.
"Our aim is to get to the end of January and be within touching distance of the top. From there on, anything is possible.”
United host Swansea tomorrow (3pm).
