NEWS NEWS BLOG SPORT brings you all the latest news from Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney became Manchester United’s second-highest goalscorer yesterday when he edged past Denis Law with a strike against Swansea.
The England captain earned his 238th goal in a Red Devils shirt and also provided the winner in the 2-1 result at Old Trafford.
The goal edged Rooney past Law and leaves him just 11 behind the club’s all-time leading goalscorer, Sir Bobby Charlton.
“It is amazing and that at the age of 30 years,” manager Louis van Gaal said.
“Of course now we are playing much more matches but still it is an achievement. Fantastic.
“For me, it is an achievement that he scores now and he scored today. I hope it’s a fantastic starting point for the team and also for him.
“I am always demanding he makes runs to the first post. He was running to the first post and he created the gap for (Anthony) Martial.
“He scores also a fantastic goal, with his left foot behind his right foot and you cannot imagine what a goal that is. A great goal. All the players have done their utmost best.”
In transfer news, both Arsenal and United have emerged as suitors of Fulham youngster Moussa Dembele.
Dembele, 19, is expected to leave Craven Cottage this January to the Premier League’s highest bidder.
The striker boasts 10 goals for the Championship club this season and has been tracked by Tottenham for some time.
But the Sunday Mirror claim Spurs may struggle to land the ace, with Arsenal and United set to place hefty bids.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger reportedly sees Dembele as a competent understudy to Olivier Giroud and Danny Welbeck as the Gunners eye their first league title in over a decade.
Welbeck is out of action until February at least, leaving Wenger with a space to fill in his squad.
However, it is claimed United are favourites to pinch the youngster.
Van Gaal has already hinted he is keen to land a striker in January, while the summer arrival of young talent Anthony Martial showed he is also preparing United’s long-term future even after he leaves the club.
Another United target, Sadio Mane, could reportedly cost the club a staggering £62.5million.
The Sun claim Southampton are holding out for £30m for their star man, who was subject to bids from United last summer.
But Mane’s contract, which could top £125,000 a week, would set the club back a further £32.5m over its duration.
Mane is expected to sign a five-year deal at Old Trafford if club bosses can settle a fee with their Southampton counterparts.
Saints boss Ronald Koeman does not want to sell his star player but is reportedly realistic about the chances of retaining Mane for the rest of the season.
