Louis van Gaal leaves the field dejected aft United's defeat to Southampton

 

A Manchester United source has revealed Louis van Gaal did NOT offer to resign in the wake of their 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

Reports suggested the Dutchman had spoken to United chief executive Ed Woodward about his future and was considering leaving Old Trafford.

But a club insider has denied those claims.

 

Meanwhile, Van Gaal has returned to Manchester after spending the last two days in his homeland.

The 64-year-old traveled to Amsterdam for his daughter's birthday but was spotted driving into United's Carrington training ground earlier today.

United face a crucial FA Cup tie with Derby on Friday and then Stoke next week.

 

Matteo Darmian could provide Van Gaal with an injury boost after he was "spitting blood" from a rib injury suffered in a collision with Southampton’s Shane Long on Saturday.

The Italian defender was forced off in the second half in clear discomfort but he has since tweeted that he was "fine” after being taken to hospital.

United have an injury crisis in defence with Luke Shaw, Antonio Valencia, Marcos Rojo and Ashley Young all out injured.
